But eel fishermen claim while stocks in Europe are under pressure, they are not in Ireland and the ban was unnecessary.

The European eel population is a single stock, and is under severe pressure, indeed threat of extinction. The only reason Irish eel stocks haven't crashed yet is the slower growth rates here, the crash in elver recruitment will be seen over the next few years as the last good elver years mature and leave our shores, and the pitifully low elver recruitment seen since the 80s is reflected in crashing yellow eel stocks in freshwater.
Apparently the eel fishermen have contracted a scientific consultant who has rubbished the scientific data - but they won't say who it is  I have my suspicions, there are one or two "consultants" out there who will say anything if the money is right.
