Just wondering if anyone had the chance to read the article in the ECHO fri 27mar 09.Basically its a rundown by a Cobh based fisherman on the decline of his industry-and his fears for the future years.
Good read and sad to a point as it can be seen how badly things have become-due to overfishing and pollutants.QUOTE"While French and English boats fish for bass some 12 miles from our shores,it might dawn on the powers that be to LIFT the 20 year ban on bass and allow us to create much needed employment."
This is his opinion and thats his right, but my opinion is that there is already enough bass fishing going on in the area ILLEGALLY,and that by opening the commercial fleet to rape and pillage the bass stocks i wonder how long it would be before the angling community would be looking for some other avenue to explore, maybe whale harpooning like the japanese fishermen, but it would only be for scientific of course.
What these guys don't realise is that the real scientific exports are saying that the bass stocks around the british isles are in decline especially due to the failure of recent year classes due to low survival rates and spawning which have been affected badly by poor winters etc.I know that might not seem like the case but just think about it for a while and you'll see that such a fishery would be detrimental and the bass would collapse completely very quickly.Rant over.
Tight lines

Didn't see the article myself.
The ideas about bass seem fairly familiar...
Can somebody scan the article and post it?
