ROI Eel Fishing to End

Not sure if anglers go after eels in a big way, but the following news about commercial destruction of the species may increase your chances...

"Eels are sold on the domestic market and exported but because of the long life-cycle of the eel this measure could mean closure for 90 years."

Good.

Not a chance they will recover soon, the returns of elvers has crashed since the late 80s, and because of the long life cycle that is only now beginning to show in stocks of adult eels here; as they grow faster in continental Europe the decline showed up in adult eels sooner there. Elver runs are still at historically low levels, so there will be no increase in adult eel stocks for a long time, indeed they will continue to decline for many years after this ban comes into force. Current models predict that with total escapement of silver eels, stocks may begin to recover within 3-5 generations (50-90 years).

Smoked eel is off the menu!
