not having a go at ye lads but I think every one of us anglers is guilty of leading to the wasteful death of many fish (I'm thinking of all the pin whiting slipped back into the night with nothing more than a bit of hope).

You don't even feel a lot of these fish on the line!

At least this lunatic had an unbelievable experience of catching a fish in one of the most primitive ways possible.
Rather it be him than a net

at least with rod and line you can release him - most of the time - he hit it four times with the spear gun - its pretty much destructive fishing all the time

and if he is flapping about to get his record accredited he will not be getting any stakes out of it until the necessary inspections etc. have taken place - (thats another days issue! )

hands up its true ive murdered hundreds/thousands of bloody pin whiting very hard to avoid

but i suppose im more against the spear fishing

true it would be great to battle a beast like that - but id like to put it back in the end myself

Well, if it's in the Sun, a paper that even lug object to being wrapped in....

I think it's a pointless killing to be honest - something we see of big fish all the time, and sometimes with incredible brutality and stupidity. I heard from a friend of a case off Hawaii where the crew of an small angling boat *shot* with a 12 gauge a huge black marlin that had been played out on the line, just so they could haul him into their little boat and bring the body back to the quay.

Closer to home, why there is more worry about the incidental, non-environmental impact, deaths of tiny whiting than the deliberate killing of big bass - or any other fish - for the purposes of presenting the carcass to get some pissy little gong from a mickey mouse specimen or records organisation beats me....

There is no comparison between Killing an impressive animal like a marlin in that manner and killing of pin whiting unintentionally, That bloke is a muppet plain and simple and I hope Karma catches up with him.

I just thought that it seemed more economical because of the way spearfishing can be very selective.
You can swim around and only spear a fish that you want to catch, hopefully to eat rather than for a trophy.

We've all been 'cod' fishing and I know I've ended up catching a non-stop stream of tiny suicidal whiting most of which don't survive.
And I know full well that if I'm lucky enough to eventually get one, that poor fella will be going onto my plate aswell.

In a comparison of how many fish are wasted between recreational spear fishing and rod-and-line fishing it seems a big difference.
I think that's what i was getting at.

I wouldn't kill any marlin if that situatuion ever arose but I certainly wouldn't shoot it and water-ski behind it for 2 and a half hours either!! :|

Recreational anglers have been killing Marlin for years, simply as trophies. A practice that makes me sick.

Now, I have no doubt that what yer man did was a pretty amazing feat. The problem now is the people that wish to do one better than him.

That's not exactly what I had in mind

But no marlin will be safe coming near a spear fisherman again.

lads we love our Angling and this Lad loves his Spear Fishing.................. The problem with our Sport is we pass jugment on all others who catch fish........................??????????? I for one would love to catch a marlin and if i did catch one as big as this then i would indeed try to claim a Specimen for it. People in Glasshouses should not throw stones................. lads grow up and smell the coffey this is the real world............................... how many simalular fish have been caught in nets or longlines and nothing is ever heard of it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Give the young Lad a break he really had a fight of a life time.
