the skipper of a howth trawler was sacked last week for landing a number of boxes of bass .the skipper, trawler and owner shall remain nameless for now but needless to say this is not their first indiscretion.expected penalties are rumoured to be roughly 1000euro per fish, lets hope so AT LEAST.

Great to see action taken against these cowboys. I would love to hear the final fine that is isuued against them

no fine,18 boxes landed(approx.220 fish),fine was calculated to be roughly 600k/3k per fish but was deferred and warning is all that was issued.

I cannot believe this. The fisheries officers involved must feel so let down by the court. The floodgates have now been opened for all commercial fishermen to do what they want.

surely all peoples involved in the fishing industry would be awares of the laws regarding bass. to just very obviously flout those laws and recieve a warning from a wigged one is a joke. that sends out some message to all others thinking of taking a haul of bass..........beware the warning, bet all the trawler lads are trembling with fear at the draconion baseball bat that is the "warning".

where are they selling these fish after they catch them
Fri Jan 23, 2009 11:11 am
If we see ''wild bass'' ie not the farmed stuff for sale in our fish shops what are we to do.. i came across this recently (Howth) ...needless to say if you ask the staff where they came from they just look at you as if your from another planet. Whole wild bass at 18euro per kilo or farmed ones bit less.
Assuming they were a by-catch (ie not what they intended to catch) what should the skippers do land them or dump them dead back into the sea.

Hi Choco,
even if the fish are considered bycatch they still can't be used for personal gain,in other words the fish can't be landed end of story.Would love to know the reason why these individuals did'nt have the book thrown at them, what a joke but typical of the irish law system. At this rate they might as well bring back commercial fishing,as all netters and trawlermen will be more than willing to run the rath of getting a TELLING OFF,what a joke and shame on the judge involved.
I GIVE UP

Was this reported in any of the papers/magazines? I'd like to get a copy, if possible.

Could you tell us what agency caught the boat and what agency/court deferred the fine?

I would also be very interested in knowing which agency and court was involved.
Regards Timmy.
