Slaughter of undersize fish.

Heard there were a number of non irish anglers taking large amounts of miniscule pollock from the dock in Dunmore East today, over beside the yachtclub. We need a minimum size for ALL fish in this country to prevent such slaughter. What area they doing with them?.

Yes i saw them myself very small fish in buckets fishing with prawns.
CUSTOMS protection boat in the dock at the same time.
If we do not get min. take home size for all fish we can NOT even start to stop them.

it was posted on this site before about a minimum size for sale for a lot of species across the counter - to apply this to catching on rod and line for culinary use would be a start

however as with everything if theres no enforcement - it wont really matter

still i think if you dont fear for your personal safety there is no harm in telling them its undersize - go with 30 cm for starters and if they pay attention or want education then elaborate into the bass laws etc

no point relying on the authorities but the lads will get sick of anglers like us harping onto them and maybe start to take larger ones and leave smaller ones

still the brazillians down this side make a fish stew and everything goes into it all sizes, regardless - huss and all!

i reckon they can only play the ignorance card for so long until they really are being ignorant knowing the size these fish can grow and the effects they are having on them at close range

rant over

The minimum landing size for commercially caught pollock is 30cm and the IFSA minimum size for culinary use is also 30cm.

I see this in Youghal a lot. Its being going on for years.....what do they do with the fish ?....feed the cats. They are too small for personal use. It just goes to show that they have no interest in conservation and i know some of these are regular anglers. Some of these anglers when they fish outside of competitions have no regard for the rules. As far as I am concerned they are not true anglers....just take as much as they can no matter what size or species.
