Without wanting to disrupt the 'shore reports thread', would anyone agree that the show of mackrel along the coasts this year has been a lot poorer than previous years?
I know the weather doesn't help and none of us are getting out as often as we'd like to, but comparing the reports with similar experiences & previous reports, I don't think late Aug/Sept is going to produce much more than what we have already....?
Even in the boat, there is difficulty sometimes locating them now!!

this "summer" is reminding me of slow mackeral summers of 3-4 years ago on the west coast anyway

I agree,
This time last year the Macks were in plague proportion on the East coast. You couldn't get a bait through them. This year you have to scratch about for a few. I think the rough weather has scattered the shoals a lot and there are a lot of smaller shoals about..... Just to throw that theroy off, Cork has has similair weater to the rest of us and the lads there are getting plenty, with them being plagued at certin spots....

we havent really had a summer to talk about.. we need a few weeks of calm and sunny weather so the sprat will come in close to do what ever they do, thats the only reason mackerel come in close, in search for sprat...

I suppose a settled spell of weather would have them turning up to order?? If we get a good summer in the next decade the macks will hopefully oblige also :?

Cork harbour is full of them. Everybody is welcome to travel down and thin them out

We're probably holding onto the macks because the harbour is full of sprat. Went plugging this morning & twice I gaffed a sprat on the tail treble.

Plenty going up here, not close to the rocks but plentiful blasting shrimpers well out.

Worst show in years of Mackerel around Dublin and Wicklow areas, reminds me of the 80's when you had to travel out to Skerries for a good show of Mackerel, hope it's not going back to those days. Usually I only fish for Bass but usually catch plenty of Macks as a by catch, this year since April have only had about 40 in total, and thats going out twice, three times a week, normally would be in the 100's. Plus the Bass started of great but have died of since start of August. Very poor year alround so far ,heres hoping the next 4 weeks will produce something worth waiting for!

Yeah, have to agree, there has been plenty around the mouth of the Foyle, Movile and Greencastle pier and on out around Inishowen Head on the Boats.
