make sure its an automatic.... incase you get knocked out when you fall in. if you will be launching boats however its best to get a manual so that it doesnt go off on you when launching.

Jackets

As Paul says an auto inflate jacket is the best option. When you choose it is no harm to check the inflation system. The “hammar” system is common and is excellent as it prevents accidental inflation due to wetness. Many jackets use a chalk disc to control inflation. Wet disc – disc disintegrates – jacket inflates. Can happen in wet conditions, spray, waves etc. After a wetting many guys are scratching their heads when the jacket inflates in the boot of the car! The “hammar” setup uses a hydrostatic valve so water must get in before inflation is triggered. A couple of cm’s of water is enough to trigger the unit. Hammar jackets are usually a little dearer.

Of course this does not guard against the “coming through the front hatch” factor, I’d say this is the most popular form of accidental inflation!!! :D

The minimum buoyancy is 150n the 275’s are “commercial” and are much heavier. I use a Mullion/Sioen Cruiser 150. The brother uses a Baltic 150 it is probably more comfy with fleece on the neck but it is a little heavier.
