I was looking at some of the write ups on MAC Tackle and thier service and I thought that I would mention my experience or ORDEAL with mail order!!
I placed an order with Gerry's of Morecambe at the end of the summer last year, worth over a thousand euro (over 700pound sterling at the time) and he let me down big time.. I received a part order and two further part orders. .I was left short over 100euros worth of tackle, he sent cheap brands and charged top brand prices,he left items off the list and put cheap junk in it's place and I ended up dealing with 3 different individuals and in the end they just ignored that I even placed an order with them!!
I was talking to two other prominent anglers on the 'scene' and their reaction was "oh no, you didn't place an order with them!!!"
I have made numerous calls, sent emails, and a registered letter to Gerry's explaining my situation and grievances and I havn't had 1 reply!!. . The reaction that I have gotten from them sc**bags is, "what are you going to do about it???" ( because I'm in a different country). I even emailed Mel Russ of Sea Angler to ask him for help and how a "business" like Gerry's can treat customers like this and be allowed to take out 4to6 page advertisements in his magazine every month, but he hasn't replied either!
I have be threatening since last year to make it known to anglers how Gerry's treats his customers, once they get your cash, they're gone! I have heard many horror stories now of how Irish anglers have been screwed by some U.K. based mail order tackle services. I WANT TO BE CLEAR THAT I AM NOT CONDEMNING ALL U.K. MAIL ORDER TACKLE SERVICES, but just be aware of places like Gerry's.
I had my pants taken down by Gerry's and I wouldn't like to see any other anglers have the same thing happen to them, whether they are Irish or not.

Thats terrible...i thought Gerrys had a reputation as being reliable... i would use mail order site such as veals a good bit without any trouble but it goes to show you still have to be careful when using these!
Ps i agree with Boycie :)

Unusual story. I've never had any problems with Gerry's. I'd more often use Veals, but I've used Gerry's without qualms or problems.
I'd like to hear the other side of this tale.

Tanglerat referred to my story as "a tale". . . and then said that he would like to hear the other side of "the story". . why is Gerry's side a story and my side a tale???????......Are you questioning my honesty?. .
A supposed service like Gerry's Tackle is not going to dirty its bib with everybody, but when they make a mistake, like the ones with my order, my experience is that they don't deal with it like professionals, they feed you full of garbage and by the time you realize it's crap, it's 6months later and communication has stopped. . .other anglers have said this to me too. . . whether anglers want to listen to the TRUTH from me is their business ( I'm not calling any anglers that found them good liars, they just got the service that I should have received, along with others like Fishaholic who has had the experience that I have had). . .
By the way lads, when I say something, my name comes up on the screen, I have nothing to hide. . . When I express a view, people know it's from me. .If I was talking rubbish, would I be happy with my name being on view for everyone to see???. . (and I'm not slagging people off for keeping their identity hidden, there are obvious reasons for this as we all know, security, so on)
I just wish to let others know what happened with my mail order with Gerry's of Morecambe, MAYBE MY STORY WILL HELP PREVENT THIS BEHAVIOUR FROM HAPPENING AGAIN. . . whether people believe me or listen to me is up to yous. . . .
The only way to hurt businesses who treat people like this is through their pocket, when people wise up to them and the ringing of the till slows, they will get the message, "provide the service you are paid to do". . I don't want their respect or any of that consumer relations jargon, I JUST WANT WHAT I PAID FOR...

I had a similar experience with gerrys.... an order worth 700 odd quid... recieved in time no bother, one rod tip eye broken..they claim it was done in transit..but a professional eye down here said theres no way that was done in transit...and i believed so myself...so i rang up and complained..sent them email pics of the rod...they take no responsibility for the rod tip, and blame it on the post...the guy down here who is a very reputable international angler said they do this sort of thing all the time. get rid of there crappy rods that have a few scrapes and blame it on postage... they offered half heartidly to replace the eye, i told them to 4get it...also they left out an order of socks i asked for, weather proof ones...they said it is out of stock...2 months later they arrive...not the socks i ordered, not the size i ordered, cheaper lesser quality, smaller size... the man has some balls...i wont be usin them again...and ive ordered loads with gerry , absouloutly loads...but veals are always a safe bet...

THanks for the information guys. I would of ordered off these guys if I hadn't of seen this. Compare it with veals I had a broken reel sent to me and they sent a new one the day I complained. Never had a problem with them its only a petty they don't have a bigger range of stock so I'd never have to look else where.
I don't know if its to late but I gave this advise out to some of the people who had problems with mactackle and they got their money back. If you can complain to your credit card if you haven't received your order after 28 days of it being debited from your account. I don't know if the delay in complaining will be an issue but if you kept any emails or correspondance this should help.

Not at all, and no offence meant. I don't know you well enough to question your honesty.

I'd like to hear the other side of this story.
In the interests of fairness I'll edit my initial post and swap around "tale" and "story". Happy to help. :D

That's fair enough, cheers Tanglerat!

I use Gerry's fairly frequently and to be fair I've never had any problems with them...... Once they did send me some feathers for mackerel fishing that were not the ones I had ordered :? ..........I phoned them straight away when the post arrived next day and was told not to worry they would sort out the correct feathers and send them on to me....... I was even told not to worry about sending the wrong ones back  The correct ones arrived the next day again. I really can't complain. I have bought most of my Zziplex rods from them also as I have found the rod building standards are second to none, and again I've had no issues.
I would have no problems about using Gerrys again. It's just a pity that everyone isn't in the same boat.
Everyone can make a mistake with an order etc in any walk of life after all we are all human but I do sympathize with Mark and Mr Green to get shafted to such an extent
The only issue I have ever had was with Spotty dog tackle and a Northstar lamp I bought. I did the usual, rang, sent emails etc with no joy or reply. I then sent a recorded letter with all my contact details on it, eg mobile and land line number, email address and home address etc so they didn't have an excuse as not being able to contact me. I also mentioned in passing that I was the secretary of a large sea angling club in N.I and would be passing on my experiences to the lads and also anyone else who would listen when pleasure angling, that seemed to gain there attention as within 24hrs they rang apologizing for not getting back to me sooner. They also sent me a new northstar lamp and had the other one collected as to have no expense to me. I had it all sorted within 4 days but previously I had been trying to get things sorted for nearly 2 months. I have never used them again since that time......

I'm sure any threats of violence expressed here were not meant literally ... but I've edited them to avoid any confusion.

i guess after reading this thread im happy i dont do mail order its always better to deal direct with a local shop

some of the savings available are fantastic, sometimes though it can be worth building up a relationship with your local tackle shop as they tend to reward loyalty (well southside angling do anyway)

I've had a mixed bag dealing with Gerry's. Out of three large orders (700 euro plus) only one has arrived without hassle. The most recent one has also been a disaster and to be honest I'll never do business with them again, very poor service.
Why isn't anybody in this country fit to compete for price with the UK based firms, would make life a damn sight easier.

I placed an order online with Harris Lures this Tuesday. It arrived this morning - everything intact!
