Tidal Hydroelecticity - Strangford Lough, Down.

In 2007 a 1 megawatt underwater tidal electricity generator is to be installed in the narrows. Part of Northern Ireland's Environment & Renewable Energy Fund scheme, the generator will take advantage of the fast tidal flow in the lough which can be up to 4m per second

Does anyone have any other information on this? :shock:
Surely a 1 Megawatt Generator is going to have some sort of effect on the Marine environment in the lough. Does anyone think/know what sort of effects we can expect? I'd hate to see the Fishing in the Lough/Narrows Destroyed :(

Id say drew give it a year and u'll see planty of private boat fishing round these structures they will definately hold fish. I know this is different but look what happened to red bay cushendall with the salmon nets everybody in a boat goes there wether it be to pick up bait fish or there not catching elsewere structures on the sea bed or the surface always hold fish (even if it does destroy the rest of the surrounding area)

So that's why they are digging big holes at one of my wee spots :x

I suppose one good thing about it is that no one's going to try and trawl a net past it?

Is it not the same scheme to Produce power for the Exploris Aquarium in Portaferry

as far as i know - these tidal generators - take some of the power out of the tide - but i think its ones of a far greater size than the one mentioned - and the larger ones are further out to sea
