Just because its written doesn't make it law!

About 25 years ago in the north east of England Alnwick council banned the digging of worm on their beaches, three anglers were charged and found guilty by the magistrate, they appealed and over the next 2 or 3 years it went from appeal court to apeal court ending up at the highest court in the land.....the council lost its case, they had NO right to make the law they tried to inact....no other council in the UK has ever tried it again knowing how much money the council ended up paying in legal costs.

This is where the governing bodies should kick in, EFSA, IFSA and the rest of them, even your local tackle shop as a business paying rates should get the ear of the councilor who covers their area.

Anglers respect the shoreline better than most members of the public, its ridiculous to ban fishing...most anglers will try to keep clear of bathers anyway, or other beach users.....its my bet the guys who write this dont know twoddle about how anglers conduct themselves while out fishing.

Anglers have rights, this council is taking them away!

Tom.

You are right.

So basicly they want to ban angling. My nephews are in Kiliney and I had hoped to take them fishing as they got older. Absolutely disgusted at this attack of our rights. In a day an age when we're trying to steer young kids away from computer games and tv and get them out we have a council stopping another harmless activity for them. What can I as a individual do as I live outside the area?

Donagh

Fri Aug 17, 2007 12:03 pm

This is a proposal, so particularly encourage residents of DLR Co Co to make submissions.

IFSA and other bodies will be making submissions as well.

Everyone can makea submission

I image there's already stuff in motion so the best thing would be to wait until we can all support a coordinated effort.

DLR used to be my county council and I still know lots of people living there. I will be explaining the situation them in the hope that they will use the ballot box next time around to register their protest.

Fri Aug 17, 2007 12:04 pm

Lads, please keep it temperate and rational.

Fri Aug 17, 2007 12:40 pm

In light of the sensitive nature of this issue this thread is being strictly moderated. Lots of us want to express strong feelings about this proposal but we need to avoid damaging the organized efforts to prevent this measure from being introduced. As jd said, please consider your comments carefully and keep it constructive.

hi
can we start a petition then or is it to early i was thinking with 2 big comps coming up in lienster ie 5th leg of liensters and jimmysmith tournament there will be up to 200 anglers present many who would be affected by this

Start organising yourselves for a long bitter battle, lads. :(

Happy days if this situation is quickly and easily resolved, but be prepared.

Somehow, I have little confidence in the IFSA is leading the opposition to this. I just don't think protest action is their thing.

So, someone else is going to have to organise the feet in the street outside CoCo's offices and on the beach in protest of this flagrant breech of our civil liberties.

Who's up for the fight?

Fri Aug 17, 2007 4:07 pm

as most of these beaches are advertised as angling beaches for tourism purposes here and abroad should the minister for tourism and marine not be the one making these recommendations ,why come to ireland to fish if its banned,it might just be on a couple beaches now but if there is a precedence set angling on all the top beaches in ireland could be affected.

Fri Aug 17, 2007 4:07 pm

Hi all,

Just to let you know I have been in touch with Mr. O. Keegan, County Manager of DLR Co Co who has undertaken to get back to me in relation to certain matters in the bye laws. The IFSA will be making proposals on the bye laws and if feet on the street are needed we will be more than willing to organize this. I have informed the County Manager that I will be available to meet personally with him to discuss any issues he needs clarification on. Please ensure that any posts you put on the site are moderate, don't forget everyone has access to view comments without first signing on. I have no doubt we will succeed on this one but please keep up the interest. Regards, Tom Lillis

I happen to be a resident in DL/Rathdown CoCo, so let me know what I can do or where I can sign. I'm also a member of Countryside Alliance Ireland, so if there's an "official" letter from this site going out I could send them a copy too.

Fri Aug 17, 2007 6:06 pm

please tell me this isn't happening, coliemore and bulloch! there hardly the east coast guide to shore fishing heaven.

Fri Aug 17, 2007 6:45 pm

The comment 'Fishing for Pleasure.....' springs out of this part of the proposal. Does this mean fishing for profit does not count? Who are the vested interests in this area? Has anyone been able to establish why they actually want to ban fishing.

One more thing. I had some interaction with the 'Keep Ireland Open' organization. Would anyone mind if I emailed them on our behalf?

mobilisation

Sat Aug 18, 2007 3:36 am

Hi

I think mobilisation of everyone who feels that restrictions through bye laws are a dangerous precedent is worthwhile and warranted. Again I would ask people to think carefully what they write, either here or in any submissions. Keep it polite and please maintain this thread's integrity.

Thanks

Does anybody have any links to stats or figures about the value and participation of angling in Ireland?

Have a look at some of the submissions to the recent EU Maritime Green Paper submission. You might find some figures there although I don't think there's much concrete data.
