With the likelyhood of this Govt calling a general election in the new year, we have to be on our guard the minister doesn't give the commercial operators a leaving present.

I'm a newcomer to bass fishing since last year and the potential for tourism far outweighs the commercial fishing gains

Ok, so his source may have been wrong but we need to remain vigilant. Any day now politicans from the various parties will be knocking on our doors asking for our support. This will be an excellent oppurtunity to get our very important
message across. Have no doubt the other side will be continue to pursue this matter. NO LET UP.

A little ray of hope, according to the Irish Times dated 15/12/10 the EU Commissioner for Fisheries Maria Damanaki has expressed her opinion that the Seabass fishery remain closed to commercial fishing. Commissioner Damanaki stated that
"Past experience has shown us that those who think they can negotiate with nature will not have a long future in fishing"

She also said a moratorium on commercial seabass fishing should be retained.

I cannot find that quote anywhere else online. It seems strange that the Commissioner would mention our bass.

It has been widely reported that the "board nomination" frenzy that usually accompanies a change in government has begun. It is at this time that many "sneaky" decisions are rushed through by government or soon departing ministers.

It might be no harm to keep the pressure up with another round of mails and letters.

Jimmy Deenihan the Fine Geal spokesman on tourism recently launches an 80 page document on tourism and has emphasised the importance of tourism in our economic recovery. Given the likelyhood of Fine Geal making up part of the next government in the not too distant future, a few letters outlining our campaign would not hurt. Any takers?

A disgrace if we do not stand together and fight this - game, coarse and sea fishers alike

Looks like Simon Kaveney is head of marine, does anyone have a clue what he's like? Might be worth getting onto him immediately?

Simon has asked questions on the bass fishery before, at whose behest I do not know. If I have time I'll do a bit of research...

fg leaflet stated that irish fisheries should be opened up.was pretty vague leaflet was distributed in louth think it was one off fitzpatricks committments

Hi folks.

Fair play for maintaining interest & keeping up the fight.

Apologies for only replying now but I thought this thread was dead.

Anyway we should all treat our letter writing and/or e-mailing like it's only at the beginning of the fight for our bass.

I did post this point already in a few other threads but I need to say it again that we need to keep our feet on the gas indefinitely. The key ingredients in our long hard battle to protect our bass will be perseverance, commitment & a never say die attitude!!

Keep up the good work and don't forget to write to the minister for tourism & minister for natural resources as well as the minister for fisheries.
