Over Fishing Rosslare Area

Looks like here the person on the the phone got mixed up between the SFPA and the EPA and gave you the wrong number - EPA wouldn't be involved in fisheries protection - it deals with pollution etc.

thats not good enough tho, if the people who are employed to deal with these matters dont have the knowledge to pass on the correct information like phone numbers then why bother having the service at all?

what you have here are people doing a socalled job with no passion or understanding of whats actually happening on the ground.you need to be out the traps like a greyhound when you recieve that phone call. .yeah sign me up too.....

First Step:

Is already kicked off by JD, a local group of anglers, communicating and sharing information on the issue.

Second step:

I am going to make a few calls at the week end to get a template so I can get signs made up similar to the following:

I aim to place these signs at various locations around the affected mark in a couple of different languages, ( I will contact and consult the authorities before I place any sign to ensure it is OK) This should remove the pleading ignorance element and maybe enlighten some people who genuinely don't know about the laws. Because at present there is no signs down there stating the laws.

I can expand the signs to other heavily fished marks in time too.

Third step:

Make contact with the authorities (email/phone/person) to make them aware that there is now a group of anglers concerned/sick to the teeth of the ongoing issue and we are prepared to take some responsibility/action and would like their input/guidance etc on the subject. This might make them sit up and take notice? (I can draft up emails over the week end.)

Count me in too. Just don't be suprised if the council tell you that you cannot erect signs without planning permission.

thats another thing to planning on signs, they will prob knock that, put it on a little trailer and they cant say a thing, some joke this country to

Lads, link here to Wexford County Council's Beach Bye Laws, no mention of erecting signs but you may want to speak to someone in their Environment Section.

Ask for a complaint number when filing a complaint and a contact name. They are required to investigate and have to furnish any findings to the complainant.

Very positive to see something coming together.
It may take a few seasons but wouldn't it be very positive if in the next season or so there was an alliance between anglers and fisheries officers to combat the issues spelled out here. I think we have a much stronger chance of fisheries people taking the right kind of interest/action if they get to know anglers on a more personal level.
I'd be happy to lend a hand to anything going on.

As Colm says, glad to see plenty of interest in this now, and i hope that all concerned can get something up and running before next season. And well done to the author of this post for highlighting the problem and all those getting involved to try and get it "sorted". Hope it all works out...

when i lived in dublin[and fished] i saw signs like these at all the wellknown bass spots.as far as i know these signs were erected by the co council and ifsa.[i am open to correction on this]outside of dublin except for waterford i havenot seen any.having said that rivers all over the country are well signposted in all the different languages.i think this is because local angling clubs control and police certain stretches of the river.just saying that wexford co council instead of hindering our effords should be happy to help[tourism ect]....by the way dannym i like your train of thought...

big blue signs arround portmarnock and malahide.these i am aware of.i am told these are seen up as far as baltray.they give all the size limits ban dates ect.maybe not in the multilingual awareness it should be in but theyre there believe it ..

seen those signs in kerry last week when we were down, and they just highlighted bass, think thats where danny got the pic

While the group probably wouldn't be doing the work that needs to be done at a very local level for the particular area in this thread i.e. policing, the group does great work that effects all things bass at a general or national level.

Always sad to read about so called anglers killing and taking everything they catch, and yes it is true to say these people doing this are not fisherman just a bloody nuiscense who deserve to have their rods and tackle confiscated and banned from fishing, sadly the authorities never seem to have the resources or staff to deal with these issues.
I would like to add this is not just happening in Ireland it is happening all over, I live in the Uk on the south coast and are local marks are being destroyed by anglers from outside the uk, mainly Eastern Europeans being some of the worst, I am not a racist but so called anglers not native to the Uk catch and kill everyhing they catch and you cannot talk to them as I have tried to explain about size limits and bag limits but they are not interested and neither are the authorities.
I was against a Sea Fishing licence but now believe this is the way forward, if it means that policing of catches can be improved and enough powers to prosecute those offenders and the powers to ban them then this must be the way forward or we will be left with no inshore fishing worth talking about.

I c what you are saying but I have to say about the licence there is just to many beaches/rock marks over here and not enough fishing bailiff to see all the area and cover the space involved, but I have seen( netting ) it to on a local mark close to where I used to live in a estuary in north county Dublin beside swords...

Sorry i have been out of the loop for a bit (New Child!) any movement on the signs i can easily put them up from Carne to Tomhaggard we could get permission from the county council Engineers / Fisherys board, just because we are heading to Winter does not mean that something / mechanism cant be put in place for start of next season Regards, Tom
