Commercial Line Bass Fishing In Southern England.

I emailed him last week - no reply either.
I'll be sending him a letter by old-fashioned post tomorrow- I believe they are obliged to at least acknowledge those. I'm also copying it to all 4 TDs in my constituency, and in the case of the non-FG/Labour ones I've asked them to put in a PQ asking the minister to clarify his position on this.
I'd urge all anglers to do the same - it only costs a few minutes of your time and a few stamps.

Great stuff. I have contacted anglers in my local club also and have asked them to pass it on to anybody that they know in the IFSA.
Surely if enough people make contact we cannot be ignored. Is Simon Coveney so important that he thinks that he can ignore emails..............I don't think so? !!!!!

Since an important aspect of the argument for maintaining the ban on commercial fishing is the benefits of angling tourism the Minister for Transport, Toursim and Sport (Leo Varadkar) should also be sent a letter.

I have it from a very reliable source that a pilot scheme of long lining for bass is currently being considered in a certain fisheries area

I wonder will it be in the Cork area. Maybe Mr Coveney is trying to keep the local commercial fishermen on his side

Well at least this may produce evidence that commercial fishing will deplete or destroy bass stocks very quickly!!

I personally believe that if this scheme starts that bass will be wiped out very quickly. Having witnessed it happening once before I cannot see how it will be any different this time.

Bord Failte can do all the marketing they like but bass anglers will not come here from the UK, France and Holland if the quality of the fishing decreases.

It is then that we will learn that a greedy few can spoil it for everyone

If Mr Simon Coveney only had the decency to acknowledge correspondence sent to him by several anglers we would know his plans one way or another.

Oh well. Looking on the bright side, at least now I can kill more than 2 Bass in any 24 hours. After all, if commercial fishermen can fill their boats, it makes no sense imposing a bag limit on recreational sea anglers.

If this goes ahead i'd love to know how its going to be controlled with fishery protection resources already at breaking point[at least thats the line been spun for years].God i hope all the recent bass fishing converts will now realise what they have been privilaged too over the past couple of years especially down here in east cork where there have been "hordes" of bass allegedley patrolling the beaches.
It may already be too late,but i implore anyone who does fish for these silver bullets to please put pen to paper and send asap to the addresses that Frank has provided earlier in the thread.

Heres me planning for the past ten days how I might get somebody trained up, confident and competent and ready during the season of 2011 for a summer employment during 2012. As a business I cannot cope with demand.

Why invest time resources and people into something that will ultimetly destroy it when its possible we have one of the greatest recreational saltwater angling resources in europe? With proper thought a little planning and a sense of ownership and pride it could provide more jobs indefinetly whilst maintaining existing positions.

This debate rages on here in many many threads, the same or similar questions get asked - there are never if ever any answers - unconnected representative bodies continue to work in an unconnected fashion, heads kept in the sand, bullshit talk, egos, and the lauding of praise on external 'experts' who do nothing except promote themselves - turn the microscope on any of them and see what you might discover

I've asked it before and I'll ask it again -and lets not forget commercial fishing destroyed it before - now that we have a somewhat recovered resource we dont we know what to do with it, andwhy is it at risk again?

Because there is no imagination and belief in what really makes this country great and what we have to offer the world and how we might use that intelligently instead of destroying it, we dont seem to be learning anything.

Excellent post Jim. A renewed drive on our part is definately required reqardless of the accuracy of the latest reported threat. A barrage of paperwork on Mr Coveneys desk may prompt clafication on this matter. The targetting of Bass commercially is always going to be lurking in the shadows.

2) Line fishing for bass, although successful in south UK waters, will not be successful here IMHO.

If it even is about to be trailed at the end of it... it may not be adopted...as unfeasible or what not...

In the uk Bass is considered a wreck fish not here, here bass is in shallower than 2m around rock pinnacle's.... I don't think you'll find many boats willing to troll there

The only successful way to catch large amounts of bass is by net... hence the illegal netters not illegal long liners

For a test look at the boat angling section and see how many bass can be caught by boat...

Trolling for bass here is indeed successful and I regularly do it.

It is also possible to use live sandeels from a boat and again I regularly do this with great success.

I do it also, but I'm not sure how commercially viable it would be?

You'd have to catch about 100 a day, easily done in UK waters not to sure about that over here...

Just got this email from Irish Bass:

Hello Stan,

I have already done some research on this and can find no evidence that it is going to happen or that any such meeting between Simon Coveney and the other organizations took place about a commercial bass fishery. It is possible that the reason that correspondence is being ignored is that the Department has no idea what people are talking about.
As it happens I am traveling up to Dublin today to meet Coveney who is attending a fisheries conservation meeting. I will do my utmost to get any information I can from him and get to the bottom of this. I will let you know what happens tomorrow.

would it really be the end of the world if bass fishing was opened up to line fishing. with proper regulation it could provide employment for both fishermen and fishery protection personal and a much needed source of income to men with familys to feed. we always fear the reintroduction of a commercial bass fishery why not embrace it and try to work with the powers that be too make it a sustainable fishery for both the pleasure and commercial industry which in my humble opinion is possible. line fishing is a very sustainable form of fishing making it possible to only kill the fish you require and returning the rest to mature and breed.
