Thanks
doggie3131 for your suggestion that’s good idea.
Could someone from forum administration or moderators make this topic sticky to promote it better and hopefully get more signatures?
I posted about the issue on at least three high volume polish angling sites, where there are people that are fishing in Ireland so you can see polish names on the list already.
For the convenience of people who just catching up with the topic – link to the petition is:

Thanks to all for your support.

does anyone have a template that could be pasted here. everyone could copy it and email it off. more people would probably do it if they didnt have to write one up themselves

Well done with getting that petition up Tony Fella. I've signed it too. The more the better. I've sent text messages to other interested parties to sign up.
In relation to the template for the e-mail, this is what I sent. Feel free to use it or edit it for that matter. It's short and to the point but might be missing some critical key points. As I said, feel free to edit it. Before I paste it in here are the e-mail addresses of the ministers I e-mailed it too:
eamon.ryan@dcenr.gov.ie;
conor.lenihan@dcenr.gov.ie;
brendan.smith@agriculture.gov.ie;
trevor.sargent@agriculture.gov.ie;
tony.killeen@agriculture.gov.ie;
martin.cullen@dast.gov.ieI suggest putting your own Subject title in.
To all the above ministers,
I urge you all, to please do all that you can within your powers to reject the recent proposals from the Federation of Irish Fishermen to allow Irish commercial fishing vessels to target sea bass and land it when caught in offshore waters.
Irish sea bass are only now starting to make a slight recovery since the introduction of the bass bye laws some 19 years ago.
Irish sea bass are slow growing fish. They are a hugely sought after sport fish that attract tourists both home and abroad. Surely the combination of tourism being so important and the fact that so many other sea fish stocks having already been depleted should be enough to leave this precious sport fish in its current protected state.
Yours faithfully,

I've sent emails to two local government TDs here, both have replied saying they have written to the relevant minister. Its good to let them know we are watching and their action (or lack of) will affect voting intentions of a large number of anglers.

I think this is great doing this can i make a suggestion to mods to put a notice of this topic in all forum headings? I was looking for the topic yesterday and thought it was gone until i saw it later as a stricky. I know Dan Boyle well I wonder would it be useful to set up a meeting with him? If we could get together people with more knowledge of the effects of the ban and hard facts on this tourism etc I would set it up and have a group meet him. I believe he would have a direct line in andi feel he would meet us if i put it to him. Also the green party should be supporting something like this its completely contradictory if they dont pat

This would be a disaster.
The application made by FIF makes reference to a 'healthy' UK bass stock based on a 2007 report. The 2007 report referred to is from the ICES Sea Bass study group. It does not say that stocks are healthy.
It says that the data they have to work with is so poor that they recommend no increase in fishing effort.
This is the crucial point that perhaps ought to be made clear.
What is 'healthy' anyway. The UK bass stock is exploited as soon as the bass are over 37cm (they don't spawn until they are 40 to 45cm)'. As such the UK bass population is made up of a large number of very very small fish, and a smaller number of larger ones.
This bears no relation at all to the Irish bass population (which would recruit from the fishery offshore). The Irish bass population is much more 'normal'. It has a a much larger number of larger fish, and correspondingly a smaller number of smaller fish.
How the FIF reconcile that the UK bass population that they refer to can be equated to the Irish popluation I don't know - I would suggest that they haven't a clue.
Members of UKBASS.com can see all the reports and the science.

just had a look, seems that Zippy,George And Bungle are taking an interest too. this is just taking the pi$$. whats the point in doing a petition if people are just gonna make a mockery of it. imagine sending it all off to the ministers with names like that on it. they'd probably laugh and fling it in the bin.

Well done for editing the petition Tony Fella. It could be people who are against what we're doing that are putting bogey names on the petiton.
In response to a previous post in this thread:
I don't think the FIF are suggesting that the state of the UK Bass stocks are a reflection of the state of the Irish Bass stocks. I just thought the idea of Irish commercial fishing boats simply being allowed to have bass from anywhere in the sea on their boats was potentially disastrous.
For starters it brings them one step closer to being allowed to exploit the Irish stock and secondly the fact that they are actually allowed have bass on their vessels just means it makes it 100 times harder to determine where they've caught their bass. Therefore it would be easier for them to then illegaly exploit the Irish stock.
Unless I have things a bit mixed up from the start myself, can anyone clarify?
