Dunlaoghaire-Rathdown restrict angling to designated areas??

This should not surprise anyone when they said "there will be no further public consultation". I said it before - in the case of the Forty Foot there is a group of people behind that who don't like ANYONE else using it - anglers, divers, and especially immigrants - and who FOR years (I'm a native of Sandycove) have been trying to do this (it was only legal action that allowed WOMEN into the place). You know who you are.

In the case of beaches I'm inclined to fish beneath the high water mark and tell the CoCo to F off. If it works for U2 at Sellafield, it'll work for you.

Don't be surprised to see the list of areas extended, especially as they outsource the maintenance of such areas to private enteprise as the public finances go around the S-bend.

After consultation with legal team they are banning angling at ALL TIMES within these areas.

Usually the Council meand the elected council, although for most things the council executive decides things and the councillors rubber stamp them.

There's something very "fishy" about this - council staff would not usually take it upon themselves to bring in something draconian like this, I would bet there's one or two councillors with a bee in their bonnet about anglers who are pushing this behind the scenes with the county manager. Shame on him/her for bowing to that kind of pressure. Makes a mockery of the public consultation process.

I'd suggest a FOI request to see the submissions made and all correspondence/notes on the issue...

I took a look at the water at very low tide over weekend - could see plenty of small pollock about at dusk. Go figure this rule, courtesy of the Dunlaoghaire Harbour "Company" (sic).

I've already done an FOI request and published the response. it tells nothing of the "individuals" (i..e, names of people who submitted stuff).

I can do another one, and one for disclosure of potential conflict of interests of staff and councillors - i.e., are any of them members of swimming organisations. After that, I'll deal with it.

They should be able to give you names, but may have to contact those people first to see if they are happy with their name being released. But that's not important - look at the numbers of submissions, were there a lot asking for angling to be restricted/banned?
I doubt you'll get much on conflicts of interest, but you shuold ask for copies of internal emails, correspondence, notes of meetings, etc that dealt with this issue, you may find that someone in the council was pushing this and their view was given more weight than the public submissions...

Get organised fast lads. Find out if it's going to be the May or June meeting, and get as many anglers together as possible outside the council's offices.

Let them know that this is unacceptable. That you're watching who's going to vote in bans on your sport. Start phoning councillors now. Get a friendly one to table an ammendment.

This will be passed unless you, the local angler, stops it. Get the Leinster IFSA involved too.

this is scandalous - every bona fide angler from the area should be writing emailing meeting to get organised asap

The FOI request response does not have to include individual contributor names. Organisations are identified. However, that said - the FOI request was for information relating to the public consultation process. I did not see ANY objections formally listed (my memory may be failing) as part of that proces. I'll upload the entire response when I get back from travel (end of week) and submit a more tightly construced FOIR.

The amended by-laws were passed by the area committee last week. Reservations were raised by Councillors , but the Manager argued strongly that the ban should operate around the clock and year round.

I am waiting to hear if the by-laws will be on the agenda for Monday's meeting.

I seem to recall hearing about a time when the irish people were forced off there fishing waters, by people from an unamed neighboring country.

Basically Irish people have fought long and hard for their rights to their waters. No one should take it off them!!

Sneaked it past us in the long grass then.

We've done the public consultation bit and see where it's taken us? One man, the Manager, has rammed his opinion home in the face of the public expression.

There's only one way now of defeating this, and that's by publicly and loudly demostrating our disgust and opposition at the doors of the Council. Anything else will be ignored or over-ridden.

Question is, are Sea Anglers organised enough to get it done?

Here's a suggestion.
Everyone on this forum should turn up at Bullock harbour and Colliemore harbour on Saturday morning.
Take over both harbours for the whole day.While not puposely getting in the way of other people. Our very presence would prevent tourists, walkers and pleasure boaters from using the harbours for the day.

When people protest, tell them that this is the only location we are allowed to fish. This will cause uproar from the public.
I'm afraid this is the only language that the County council understand.

We will be forbiddent to fish in 4 specific areas at all times.
