I'm reading this and to be honest its laughable with some of the stuff that has been said.Fishing you either get it or you don't, if you don't that fine no problem. But if you join a forum like this and come out with some of the stupid stuff that has been said here you should join something like (I killed all my catch now lets go sell them)Its true someone has said above if it was bass then you would see a complete different reaction to this post.Ah kill them all i say birds, dogs, cat, cows sell the lot anything that moves

Theres 2 types of angler, Hunter and sporty... I myself am both, I like to bring something home to eat " my kids love fresh fish" and I also love the trill of the catch. I get depressed if I cant get out at least once every 2 weeks.

BUT I can see both sides of an argument here, Lets say that in the old days anglers sold their catch to mongers, chippers and shops, that creates less need for trawlers because local fisher men are supplying the fish. But its not the old days and the trawlers are already draining the sea of fish so it stands to reason that anglers selling their catch is just adding to a growing problem.

If the fish stocks wer'nt so bad, would it really be this much of an issue?

theres not right or wrong answer to that.
some people enjoy the sport and some for the food.
some people may need the money and would sell them, but if you were buying bait i would doubt you need the money from selling them.....
i personally only catch and release.i would sometimes keep a few for friend but thats it.i personally would not sell any fish i caught

well maybe if it was a whopper....lol 8)

The PC brigade are out of control on this site? Who says the site is only for sport fisherman?
There is fishing etiquette yes but no laws, I rarely keep any of my catch, maybe some mackerel during the summer but there's guys out fishing 2-3 nights a week taking the full bag limit of bass, are they in the wrong? How about the lads deep sea fishing catching wrasse that will have expanded air bladders that will never go back alive.
So the guy wants to buy a few fresh fish off you, big deal, get a life

you get a few quid
and we get the sea rat numbers decreased

Entitled to free expression of opinion on this site.

1. I agree whole heartedly with the OP, I see where there is a problem with being asked to sell your catch. Anyone sea angling for profit in this way should have their rods snapped and their arses kicked.

2. The Blatant disregard some seem to have regarding species other than Bass is absolutely disgusting at times, we don't live in the good old days. We live in times where FNs are clearing out our harbours and beaches and foreign supertrawlers are raping our deep seas.

Angling as a sport can't be that important to some people judging by some of the views expressed on this site. If it's not for personal use, it should go back, if you practice otherwise, your no better than those b*st*rds who have had a field day destroying our fisheries for the past 4 decades.

Sincerely, a proud member of the "PC Brigade"..

anto, the only reason I allowed your post to go up on SAI was so everyone can see what happened.

You're permanently banned. Troll.

"Anyone sea angling for profit in this way should have their rods snapped and their arses kicked. "

But it's ok for a guide to charge a foreigner visitor a couple hundred euro to catch a fish that with 10 mins research online he could catch for nothing!!

Can we assume that nobody actually eats fish either? From the chipper or supermarket?

So we are against the trawlers, fair enough, and also against rod caught fish which is surely a better alternative to trawlers?

Where do I buy my fish tree from so?

Is there any wonder the site is struggling to retain posters with useful and informative content with this nonsense flying about!

Totally agree with the above
But I dont think its as clear cut as sport versus comercial.

First and foremost I havn't ever sold any of my catch so lets be clear about that.
But.......the club that im a member fishes deep water wrecks for the first few trips of the year.
Pretty much all fish caught are __ by the time they reach the surface. So by the end of the day we end up with probably around 3 or 4 boxes of Pollock, Ling and Coalies. Most of us would take a few for the table, and the rest get handed out to whatever people have gathered on the pier on our return.
I don’t know the selling value of the various species of fish, if the club could sell a few boxes of fish the money could be used constructively towards subsidizing the cost for Juniors, because at the minute the fact of the matter is that charters are so expensive that with the limit of 10 to 12 people onboard, you don’t want too many juniors as it just puts the cost up for adults, but juniors are the future of the sport.
Or, the money could be used to go towards a prize fund for the clubs annual summer festival. The bigger the prize fund, the bigger the pool of enteries. As it’s a two day festival, local businesses such as Pubs, B&B’s, shops will all benefit from the increased tourism.

I know it opens up other issues in terms of exploiting the position, but if the club could legally sell say 10 boxes a year, I genuinely think it would have more positive effects than negative.

BTW this is my my own personal opinion, not that of the club's that I fish with

There are subtle differences between guiding services and hoiking
Fish out of the sea to line your own pocket. Guiding services help people find fish in unfamiliar ground, but doesn't precisely guarantee a catch... As the man says, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. As for my views ur free to dismiss them, as am
I to dismiss yours.

If you're not happy with the "good old days", trawlers will help the modern world ! Correct ?
I dont understand the complaints here now ... trawlers are bad, few bob made from a rod is also bad ... Sounds like you are happy if all people will catch their own fish themselves. Would like to see over 500K anglers to catch their food every day/week basis. What would you say then ? I bet no one here in this forum will be happy with that either ... Only moan is what rules in this forum .. Are you happy any day ? And i dont mean the days when you catch 12 cods and taking them all home !

I never sold my fish either, but i will swap it for a diesel for my van in future :D
