Over Fishing Rosslare Area

I've had call to ring this 24 number a number of times since it has been launched. They take all details but do sweet F all about it as far as my experience is concerned. I have reported nets on more than one occasion and the follow up was some officers arriving at the area and not even following clear directions that I have given to find the nets. What the fcuk is that about? They have also arrived at times either too early or late in the tide despite being told EXACTLY what time to arrive at!
The whole thing is an unfunny joke. They blame resources and funding etc but I think their main problem is common sense and MOTIVATION. End result is they are simply not doing their jobs properly. If you or I wasn't doing our job in the morning how long would we last?

How hard is it to plan an operation whereby they know where and when and in some cases who is carrying out these illegal acts?

I've no faith in them at all and have been wondering to even bother making future reports to them.

Andrew I'm beginning to think youre right. I've confronted the foreign boys before and talking gets nowhere with them.

Maybe a show of numbers of anglers in force and a stern warning might solve it mod edit .



Just to add also..... I've been asked by the powers to be when reporting such actions if I have photos, car regs etc. How is that my job to gather that? Are they not paid for that?
Or is it me who should risk my car getting damaged my family's property being targeted or indeed a serious injury? Give me a break

i have witnessed it all first hand, any man that looks shocked and curses at you for catching fish when he is getting none, and more shocked and a lot more cursing when you put the fish back is not an angler in my opinion, there was 6 of them and 2 of us, so i wasent going to open my mouth.

Jasus lads, i hope ye can get something done as soon as possible, but this gang has more than likely just moved to another location. I remember reading last year about a "gang" of foriegn nationals moving down the west coast of ireland targeting pollock and they were well organised. But while i'm not going to blame foreigners on all the destruction of some fish stocks in our rivers, lakes and now the shoreline (we all know there is a lot of local f**kers at it as well), i will say that the foreign gangs seem to be organised in some way and in my opinion, some of the numbers you call to report this are quite useless. As jim says, only locally organised organisations like that being run in Cork can maybe put a dent in what they do in that area, but like i said, they will get drunk off with the hassel there and just move onto pastures green. Its a no win situation lads unless those in powers get off there fecking asses and do something about it and that the punishment meets the crime, because if not, locals at some stage will take it into there own hands and the punishment will more than meet the crime, and no, i'm not condoning some action that locals might take, but we all live in the real world.

Before it gets totally xenophobic - there are other aspects related to this location wreaking much more/additional damage based closer to home - there is a much bigger picture.

When you spend as long as I have mentioning the same things to the same people and you know its impacting your sustainable livelihood and the potential for tourism growth and the issues never go away or are dealt with - then it entitles me to share the frustration. You have to stop answering the phone calls.

You could end up in a soft room feeling very happy believe me!

In another country a building would exist on those cliffs overlooking the reef, a genuine centre of excellence for bass fishing in Ireland, bass anglers arriving in Ireland two miles from a major ferry port where they could stop and learn and share and spend a day or a coffee and stay or at least move and know a bunch of stuff about bass fishing in Ireland - info maps and t-shirts and DVD's and reports and techniques and gear and gods knows what else......a historic location like this, a place of significant natural and National importance - but who has the vision, the balls?

We can’t in the smallest way possible manage even what we have.

I haven't fished there in three seasons with any international customers - one of the worst experiences of my life happened on those rocks created by an Irish angler one quiet afternoon.

Jim what you just decribed sound absolutely great and i dont see why it couldint be done(should be done),But if the scum that are down there now breakin the law are not stopped soon there wont be a fish left down there anyway!

Lads, what Jim has outlined here has to be a major part of the answer. A group will give everybody focus and if you can get the local fisheries people involved, it may motivate them better. Obviously, they shouldn't need motivation but you lads getting to know some of them better can't but help. I fished this spot 3/4 times last year but left it alone this year because of the pressures its feeling. I'm in Dublin but I'd be happy to be part of any group formed to involve concerned anglers and hopefully fisheries people against the mass catch and keep and full on poachers that are slowly destroying this resource.

Through this site there was a meeting of like minded anglers a while back (2009). A meeting was held in Midleton and the fisheries board were in attendance. The “East Cork Bass Alliance” is not an actual organisation but a loose collection of anglers interested in the preservation of a valuable resource. The ECBA has its own section (private) on this website where anglers can discuss sightings of possible nets etc. There have been many successful outcomes where criminals have been reported, caught and prosecuted due to information provided by anglers.

Could you organise yourselves down that way? Have a meeting where the IFI would be invited? Make representations to be IFI and when you have confirmation publicise the meeting & gather as many anglers as possible. If you people can organise I would be happy to come down and be an “independent/ neutral” chair, if you do not have somebody locally to do the needful (contacting the board etc).

I must say I am shocked that such activity, which appears to be common knowledge and ongoing, is not acted upon. As I said to somebody the other day – If we had a problem like this in Cork the local IFI would be all over it like a rash.

Something will need to be done on this matter alright.......

i live in rosslare .if i am not fishing the point i walk my dogs there. often i have gust sat there watching socalled anglers fish.sometimes it makes my f#####g blood boil.dont even start me on the litter issue.....what jimh says is very true the point is of huge importance to people of all walks of life [birdwatchers photographers ect ect.what jimh jd bigballs ect suggested is agreat idea.birdwatchers anglers ect get togeather and look out for the place.my help is here if anyone wants to get togeather to actually do something real......

Recognising a complacent attitude in those responsible for fisheries protection doesn't absolve anyone from their responsibilities as an angler just because you happen to witnesses poor management of resources. In fact it should confirm to people that anglers can do something more constructive and perhaps take the opportunity to DO something and get things working better, perhaps in a partnership or alliance.

Jim Clohessy's example/suggestion is the best post here - some people here including myself are willing to get involved in the 'hard stuff' - anybody else?

thats not too surprising, i rang the hotline about suspected nets in east cork back in march, this is the response i got

i just rang the 1890 34 74 24 number about something and was told they are ONLY inland fisheries so could do nothing for me. was told to contact the Enviornmental Protection Agency instead on 0539160600

I contacted the EPA to be told its nothing to do with them and to ring
DUCHAS on 016472300
when i rang that number i got a message to say the number is not in service

Looks like here the person on the the phone got mixed up between the SFPA and the EPA and gave you the wrong number - EPA wouldn't be involved in fisheries protection - it deals with pollution etc.
