I primarily get involved with clean ups across NI and I'm always interested in what people are doing to clean up their coastlines and inland waterways. We run a Clean Coasts Programme in association with Coca-Cola and encourage groups to clean their shorelines, particularly during the bathing season. Towards the end of the bathing season every year we hold our annual Coast Care Awards. This year the awards will be held in Parliament Buildings, Stormont and presented by Environment Minister Alex Attwood MLA who has taken a great interest in marine pollution. These awards are designed to acknowledge the work volunteers do on their coastline or inland waterway. If you would like to nominate a group or individual for one of these awards, please see the link below.

Hi Folks,

Charlie told me about this thread so thought I would have a look. I work for a small anti-litter charity called TIDY Northern Ireland and we run a Clean Coast Programme in association with Coca-Cola. The aim of this programme is to raise awareness of marine litter and to encourage clean ups along Northern Ireland's beautiful coastlines and inland waterways and at the end of the bathing season around October every year, we hold our annual Coast Care Awards to acknowledge and encourage the great work that volunteers do. This year the awards will be presented by Environment Minister Alex Attwood MLA, in Parliament Buildings, Stormont. If you would like to nominate a group or individual for an award for their work in Northern Ireland, please see the link below.

For those of you in the south of Ireland, An Taisce run a similar programme and the CoastCare Merit Awards. Please see the link below.

I have found to target the litter louts you need a carrot and stick approach. The carrot is being able to take part in a clean up and take pride in a local area as well as the Coast Care Awards. The stick approach is running the risk of a fine, which many of you know happens rarely. Unfortunately the councils enforcement officers have large areas to patrol and you're lucky if you can get them onto a beach, nevermind a rocky shoreline and like I saw in another post, Councils will not send their staff onto rocky shorelines for fear of injuries. This is where volunteers play such an important role and unfortunately have to clean up after others in difficult locations.

I am proposing a day of action! Saturday 17th September is International Coastal Clean Up Day and I'm encouraging groups and individuals to do your bit on this day to shame litter louts and raise awareness. At the moment Millisle Community Association and Cloughey District Community Assocation will be carrying out beach cleans on this day, so you are all more than welcome to join in or organise your own clean up. Just simply think of a location and ask around some friends to join in. TIDY NI has some kit to lend out to volunteers and if not try contacting your local council for a lend of bags, gloves and litter pickers and ask them to arrange waste collection. Also, because we are sponsored by Coca-Cola we can supply soft drinks to volunteers who participated.

Do you have any thoughts or comments on this?

Hey Tricia nice one!! But i can only say for myself I wouldnt want a reward, just the though of heading out to a local mark without tripping over somebodys waste would be great I have photos and when i get time will post, whats annoying is you see wildlife with mono around thier legs etc... and everybody blames fishermen, when at the end of the day its one clown not taking care of his gear properly and throwing it around, as for the picking up rubbish on Howth (or anywhere else) im all on for it but where do i leave the bags of rubbish? also would need to bring the rope to haul it back up the cliff :D the sad thing as mentioned earlier these clowns that litter, dont seem to give a damn, the rubbish is lighter going up rather then it was going down in the first place.... love the Carrot and Stick ;) me thinks for us it be Bass and Gaff Hook though :D
and the reward for us... after a clean up... would be you guessed it a right aul fishin session :D

Its the actions of clowns like this that will close down great marks all year round not just when the macks are runnin! I was told someone recently fell off the lions head last month! ......

two things about howth. At the weekends there is no litter collected by the harbour or co council.you should see the state of the place of a bank holiday monday after the gulls have pulled all the bins around not to mention the day tripper anglers/scumbags who leave all there rubbish on the pier or in the harbour.

I have only joined this site recently, and didnt think my rant would have caused such a response! Im a member of two s.a.c's in south east antrim and if some sort of clean up was oranised, I reckon I could get volunteers from both. Keep me in the loop. On a more depressing note, on tue 2.8.11 myself and a couple of mates were fishing a pier; a few mackeral bashers came down and fished for an hr. To cut a long story short, when they pulled thier cars off the pier the area they were fishing was covered in s**te. Not fishing litter, just litter! There was a litter bin within feet of them! We can clean up after folk, but how do we prevent it...............

Twinkle .. i hear ya, but i mainly fish Howth during weekdays (if not Poolbeg or some other shore mark) but I was refering to the cliffs were I wouldnt expect Council workers to go. And I wouldnt blame the council, as its scum thats causing the problems of the vast amount of litter not only on this mark but thanks to Bazzer74 opening our eyes to a national problem... one of my fears is a nice fishing spot that produces well could be closed for fishing due to litter or "anti social behaviour" (one of the english mags I get mentioned that thier council closed down a beach for fishing for that very reason) one or two clowns could ruin it for everyone  but thanks to this thread (again Well done Bazzer74) its great to see so many like minded folk giving a damn!! Tight lines to you all!!!! Damn we have to go fishing together one of these days!!! Sides I want to see Chuckaroo bait up and what size hooks he's using!!! "We can clean up after folk, but how do we prevent it..............." Bazzer thats the golden question....but... I think Chuckaroo has the answer

About the litter problem and the so called anglers that are causing this problem, I was fishing howth today but not he usual marks a mark that overlooks the coast and Dublin bay bit of a track down to the rock but the great thing was not many go there to fish and the place was spotless and we didn't need to clean up any old mono or empty trace wrappers and a god day fishing was had by the two of us...... and we left the mark as we found it... CLEAN which was a great ting to do.....

Tight Lines

Hi Patricia. Nice to ‘see’ you! :D Thanks for taking the time to read our posts and sign into the forum.

Your proposal to get us involved in a clean-up (International Clean Up Day) is great as i know that plenty of guys on the forum here would be willing to get involved, some of us do it all the time, however, I was also hoping that you might be able to offer advice on how to help prevent littering in the future... It would be great to see a long-term solution to this problem. :!:

(btw, I know TIDY NI cleans the beaches and that the council will not send officers onto the rocks, so it is all these others places that I refer to - rocky shorelines, harbours, piers, breakwaters, seawalls, and anywhere else that anglers like to fish from...)

Is there anything that you can suggest? Or is this a matter that we should be approaching our local councils with..?
Does TIDY NI get involved with getting signs erected? Signs that threaten prosecutions, inform of damage being caused to the environment, highlight the threat of fishing line and the negative image litter can portray to tourists, and so on...... Maybe more bins could be provided right on the marks?

Does TIDY NI work in close conjunction with the local councils? Would you even be in a position to make them aware of all this and see what can be done about it?

Its true, and im sure that you have probably seen it for yourself, the amount of litter at these fishing places really has to be seen to be believed :!: :!:

Thanks Patricia!

Charlie

fair play lads on doing the bit of clean up - seems its the only way to deal with the problem - no use talking to the litter louts

also as you pick up the rubbish you can convince yourself the karma police will be good to you and throw up a decent fish

Re: Litter!!!!!!!!!

Mon Aug 15, 2011 11:31 am

@Sparky...not bad mate its the one just up from Balscadden! Havent been out there in weeks but that was the last time i was there, and the smell.... well lets just say... Im glad computers arent advanced enough!! :D but seriously making a point to fish there this weekend and bringing the litter stick and bag... and as corbyeire says might just hook into something nice.... or find a €20 note

Oh oddly enough been fishing Poolbeg lately its not that bad (suppose the wind blows off the waste into the sea :( though) but damn if the dog walkers dont pick up the poo!!! brought my son out this weekend for a bit a fun, and we had to pretend the dog poo was land mines!!!

Re: Litter!!!!!!!!!

All the east coast beaches are full off litter, ennareily for one is so bad it makes you think ur on a refuge dump! Wasn't like this 2 months ago tho. I been fishing it nearly every weekend since April and there wernt much litter. Now it's summer and smoothies are about it's unreal!

I know fishermen are going to say it's all kids but that's bull sh,it! Most of it is from the fishermen going there and camping and drinking! I was there 2 weeks ago and right where we wer fishing the rubbish was unreal! Bait, line beer cans, bottles, food! Right in the tracks off a few tripods and shelters!

Re: Litter!!!!!!!!!

Fri Aug 19, 2011 2:52 pm

lads it looks like this matter is in our own hands.
TidyNI only takes responsibility for cleaning the beaches, amongst other things inland, and our local councils dont want to send their staff onto rocks etc because it is deemed too 'dangerous'..
this is of course understandable but hopefully something will change in the future if we keep at them.
in the meantime, it looks like we are going to have to approach our local concils to see if they can provide rubbish bins and signs, or anything else than can do, to help prevent this from happening.
otherwise WE will have to make our own efforts
feel free to get involved with the beach cleans too though...! Tricia has provided info and links above :)

Hi Lads

I was out for a walk with herself down the north bull wall down to the statue and on the way down i noticed that the steps down at the end ways full of empty trace packets mono line and fishing crap..

She wasn't to happy with me wanting to pick it up but I explained to herself that we ( the clean anglers ) don't want to get a bad name. Got a bag of a dog walked and proceed to clean up the mess and the amount of people looked at me and asked why I was doing what I was i explained to them that its not the full time angler leaving the dirt but the majority is the people that wants the mackerel.( but not all the time is it just mack bashers!!!!!! Sorry but true )

Any way to cut a long story short I left the place clean and way happy to do so....... AS IT A MARK I LIKE and have had good success at. Just need to respect the marks people fish.....

Well done Sparkey and well said, Im honestly goin to start packing my litter stick, I got one from the council some years back (never relised it was going to be in daily use!!!) any time i go fishin, Question though: would the council object to us leaving a bin bag next to the council bins?? must ring Fingal County council later today and find out about were i can leave this rubbish when I collect it from Howth (my mrs would killl me if I started takin it home, bin charges etc!!)

Also remember personal safety, some of these marks I wouldnt touch the rubbish with my hands (rats, etc) when I fished North wall some weeks back, a very friendly rat tried to make off with some of my bait!! LMAO!! he came right up to me were i was sittin looked up and over at the bait!! :D
