I would agree with jw to fish high up but not as high as the lad in the paper,I fish rock marks 15 to 20 feet off the water,I was fishing one very clam summer day and was on a rock about 6 feet above the water and one freak wave came is and washed over my boots,never even seen it coming,if I was on the lower rock I would have been swept off it

Agree also. As to the Downpatrick ledge, older locals round here remember their fathers and grandfathers going handline fishing round that spot, so the practice probably has an ancient history, and I havent heard of any accidental fall-overs. Talk of penalties is a bit harsh.

most locals have a vast amount of knowledge of the areas they fish and live in. a lot of the tradegys last summer was from foreign anglers not knowing the areas well enough and paid the price with there lives and there childrens.

I don't know what all the fuss is about it happens all the time on duleaky!!!!.... and it's much the same height anyway!!! and I'd say the politicians would be in favor of this kind of activity, if they fall in it would be one more off the live register.

I fish there regularly in the boat - deep water (80-100ft) almost right up to the rock and well sheltered on the east side. Biggest danger can be all the leads raining down from above....

More importantly why are there no railings or signs there to prevent this? If people die each year from these places why arn't they deemed a danger to the public and access denied?

Imagine living up there and your kid says he's off pollack fishing!

To be fair fishing on either side of the cliff - top or bottom - both equally potential fatal places to fish. Most of us will not put our own lives before a bit of sport, those who do end up in papers giving us all a bad name. It makes no sense in angling on top or bottom. Big mistake.

Afraid there is absolutley no money in selling stories to the press. Looks like its frequented by tourists so some tourist with a big lens managed to capture it.

you're just plain factually incorrect there, hoards have been fishing from marks like Dunlickey for
generations and nobody has ever fallen in. Do a quick google on this site or the internet and you
will find that people being washed in by the swell is the real danger

Jw if you read what I said I commented on how both fishing from a cliff top as high as the one pictured, is as dangerous as fishing from a ledge where your likely to encounter a rogue wave in a big swell. I'm sorry, but if there are no recorded fatalities to prove my point fair enough. But if you can't see the outright danger and stupidity of what's pictured i don't know, it's clear as day. Generations may have fished here, but in doing so risked their lives. It's not exactly what id call safe.

if u could get down to the lower ledge wouldnt it be a great spot for fishing a rock mark.i got a lovely 6lb cod last year tight to that cliff on mussel

Don't see the big deal here the lad is fishing its his life. Id fish that mark if it held fish just have to be careful just like when you cross a road. Lads in Australia do it everyday http://www.worldseafishing.com/forums/s ... hp?t=66954
