I actually think that you can point the finger at a foreign minority...I don't know who else is trying to eat pin whiting and codling (along with roach, perch, rudd etc from freshwaters). There has been a dramatic increase in the volumes of rubbish left at shore marks since this multi-national thing evolved. Yes there was always some rubbish left by Irish 'anglers' but not to the levels that we're now seeing. Some of my local marks in West Clare are a disgrace (Bridges of Ross, Black Head, Dunlicky to name a few) and I know who the main culprits are...I would think 20% Irish...80% non-Irish. And the booze...beer cans, vodka bottles...points the finger in a certain direction.

I took another stroll down there Saturday morning and it wasnt as bad as the previous week so fair play to whoever did pick up stuff. There was a bit of rubbish about and i picked up a couple of bits of line that were dangerous for joggers or people walking. Now im far from an angel and litter wouldnt necessarily be a massive pet hate or something that really annoys me too much, im not on a crusade or anything like that but its fairly simple, if you make a mess, you pick it up. There are enough of bins there to be fair.
As i was walking back another angler was going along picking up alot of bags and rubbish that was lying around, good to see a responsible angler (and he did look like a non national but i wasnt talking to him so cant be certain). The message must be getting through to people, even if it is only a few.

I don't understand this theory of putting up posters. They aren't going to change anybody's filthy habits.

There are (presumably) laws or bye-laws against littering at these marks. Presumably there are litter wardens employed by the local authorities involved.

So, if it was me - my fishing marks being polluted, with the consquent danger of angling being banned - I'd be jumping up and down at the local authority to actually enforce the existing laws and to send down the litter wardens to dish out fines, or whatever they do. do that a few times and word'll soon spread amongst the guilty parties.

Start lobbying lads, start demanding they enforce existing laws to solve the problem, before they even think about banning.

Think about it - if decent responsible anglers started agitating for action to be taken by the local authority against the litter louts then it sends a message to the L.A. that anglers are interested, involved and committed to that mark, and banning would be a bad thing.....

its easy to point the finger at foriegn nationals for litter and the keeping of small fish but as stated in a previous post the irish are doing it too. im not saying the foriegn guys are angels as a lot of them are at it, but not all.
i fish a little bit with a hungarian guy from work, nicest fella youll ever meet and more conservation minded than most. he got stuck into 2 irish guys one day on ballycotton pier last winter and was told to "f$$k off you polish scum". they had just yanked the hook out of a doggie and kicked it off the pier. he laughed at them and said he wasnt polish and they replied with "ye're all the same".

never.never. throw your litter about.

Couldn't agree more with you here Ivan and your percentages are a good guess too. It is them they are just so f__kin selfish and greedy not an ounce of respect for this country at all. Yes there are some considerate people too but few and far beween. I honestly believe if nothing is done about all of the fishing problems the problems will go away because there will be no nice places, or legal places to fish. Coarse fishing will be wiped out I'd say in about 3 years, or banned because of litter. The next move will be into the private fisheries, see if they get away with it there.

Ive mostly noticed fools who cant fish, be it foreign nationals or Irish leave rubbish.
Really Anglers clean up.
