it is hard going over there been there and got the t-shirt but we where having to use size 12 to 16 hooks with no beads or swivels just if you could get them the 2 way beads. the fish seemed to spook very easy.

could get them the 2 way beads. the fish seemed to spook very easy.

Mark should have a chance then, he took a hundred packs of them beads with him, that cash register in viking tackle is still ringing

I'm going to be controversial here, and the reason is I am trying to provoke debate amongst anglers on here as to how do we move forward with our Teams ?
A reasonably good result for Mark coming in 20th in the World, but how did other International Irish anglers finish in 70th and 71st out of 74 ?, and how did the Irish team, picked through the masters, the pool, and the fishoffs, come in 14th place out of 16 ? considering our nearest neighbours England and Wales finished 2nd and 3rd overall ??
Why do we have such a discrepency between us and the Welsh and English ??
Is it down to Bad Luck ?
Is it down to little or no research ?
Is it down to Little or no practice ?
Is it down to lack of committment ?
Is it down to the venues or time of year for the fish offs ?

What do anglers on here, and indeed that fished, think are the answers to these questions ?

It will be interesting to see what suggestions and comments will be made, and hopefully these will help to start moving the teams up the standings..

No disrespect to the anglers who competed in this world championship but the only process is selection, get a settled team like the brits with a wealth of experience, like it or not it works. Horses for courses is what i say.

Good Post Dave. However the lack of response is startling. If you said you killed a bass it would open up a huge debate, the poor performance of an Irish team, silence.....

There is no doubt the guys who travelled are fine anglers and no doubt sound guys but you have to question the performance. The question of selection has been around for years and at this stage it must be worth a shot. Fishing Garyvoe and the Bank in Youghal is a million miles away from using size 16 hooks. You would be better to go to the Lough in Cork and pick your team there at least they are using the right tackle.

Pick a team for the venue.

Interesting stuff and merit in what you are saying. However, I feel if you go down the road of "picking" an international team it will be the end of match fishing in this country. How many anglers are going to attend club comps to get a master angler slot with an ultimate goal of trying to pull on the green blazer? Not so many methinks. Where is the development going to come from? Would we be left with an elite bunch of 20 or so lads in contention with noone else getting a chance? Whilst I have no doubt it would improve international standing I feel it will turn match fishing in this country into an elitist sport where joe bloggs fishing his tits off in one part of the country won't get a look in.

I'm not disputing what you are saying at all lads, before anyone lines up to have a pop. Venue choice and time of year should perhaps be looked at more carefully but I firmly believe that you should have the right to fish for your place and not have it left up to a selecting committee in some other part of the country. Perhaps look at that again, perhaps some form of a league system around the country or whatever. But again, if you go down the road of a selecting committee or similar, it will kill match fishing.
