I have to admit I've rarely come accross discarded rigs. They were more than likely washed up or forgotten. I can't see too many anglers leaving rigs behind, which they've paid good money for. That said, the rubbish left behind by anglers is a real problem. I spent a lot of the summer fishing Sorrento rocks and you just would not believe the argling related rubbish strewn all over the area. It's quite disgusting and it's everywhere. It has become so bad there that I would not be at all surprised if the council stopped angling on those rocks. You can't take a step without seeing 3 or 4 fishing related rubbish. It's a disgrace. I also agree that we should pick up a few bits around us where we fish if others have left stuff behind. However if you were to do that at Sorrento rocks, you'd need several black sacks and considerable time to clean it up.

i agree that the mackie bashing spots do seem to be the worst for angling litter. I was on a popular mack spot a few weeks back and it was a disgrace, i picked it up and threw it in a bag when i was leaving. i came back a few days later and it was worse so i thought whats the point!
youll notice how much cleaner places are in another few weeks when the macks are gone........thats if they ever came in!!

Dog walkers have as much right to be on the beach as we do! Some people fishing leave the place like a tip as you can see from the examples above. There is no excuse if you leave hooks on a beach then you are directly resonsible for whatever carnage they cause, The girls in the original article may not have anything against angler's but now after a costly vet's bill and anglers moaning about dogs on the beach they might

Totally agree with you Keith and beebub2... And I know that when you pick up some garbage and come back a few days after and finding the place ruined again can be discouraging ...

But we must show that all anglers are not bad (walking with a bin bag (no need to have a 100l one) full of stuff, if you come across somebody, he will ask you what you have caught and at this time you can show that you care about our environment and that the dirty guys are a minority) ...

As well, the majority of dog walkers walk with their lovely little bag, saying look I have picked up my dog poop ...

In our society nobody needs the impopularity(?) of a minority ...

By the way you have made me curious about blindness (loose of sight) and dog excrements. Do somebody have a link where I can learn more on this ? Do you need to get excrements in your eyes or this more linked with parasites (like worms) ?

Well said Aurelian , I fished in Wicklow Harbour today and most of the guys fishing there cleaned up after them and went off with their little plastic bags of rubbish to deposit them somewhere else(hopefully in a bin ).I had my rubbish beside me in a bag and people walking by and showing their kids the worms etc could hopefully see we're not all litter louts.

Fished Colimore Harbour last night (report later). There's now a large bin at the end of the pier which is great. Last night, less than 10 feet from said bin was newspaper with bait remnants left. 10 feet! Naturally I picked it up and binned it. The effort nearly killed me

Nobody intentionally leaves rigs on a beach - but I have lost lots of rigs on snags, clumps of kelp, crack offs, leader knots coming undone etc.

You have been fishing on different beaches to me - only once have I seen a dog walker with a bag.
I have no problem with dog owners letting their dogs off the leash for a run but if they do then should keep a close eye on what it is digging up or accept the consequences if it empales itself on a lost rig.

Had an argument with a lad on Arklow beach last night, a big boxer dog bounded down the beach with half a tree in its mouth and proceeded to pee on my beach buddy, i hit it a smack of my freezer box lid and the dog went for me. I told the owner that he should have the f###ing thing on a lead he told me i should not be fishing on this beach that there were signs at the entrance. however it went on and on and it came to no conclusion i was hopping. and that's not the first time this has happened. I think dog owners should take responsibility for there muts and put Nappy's on them when they are out. Any one else had this problem.

I think all dogs should be on a lead by law when on a beach. The dog in question would not have got the hook in its mouth if it was under control of it's owner, dog owners pay scant regard to anglers and other beach users and in fact use the beach as dog toilets there is noting as bad as coming off the beach with a shoe or wellie full of dog doo.
Which is worse a child loosing it's sight from the worms that are in the dog doo, or a dog with a hook in it's mouth.
Anglers in particular match anglers don't leave rigs on the beach purposely it's usually a mistake in the dark i have often done it myself and tripped over it when walking away from my peg, it's not right leaving rubbish on a beach or fishing mark it think lads know my views on this subject it does our sport no good

a good shower of large stones and a bit of sand will sort the dogs out paul,or a nice long blackthorn stick in the rod bag

Have seen it happen to a friend of mine.....but you could give the dog a tasty treat like the head and guts of your filleted mackerel....see how the owner likes to clean up dog puke from the back of his car on the way home!!

Lads, the original issue was anglers leaving rubbish on beaches. What dog owners allow their dogs to do is a separate issue entirely. The bottom line is we have to tidy up after ourselves AND, unfortunately, remove other people's angling related rubbish when possible. We could lose access to beaches very easily, saying "But what about the other guys??" (dogs and their owners) won't be viewed as a valid argument in our favour.

Dont remember seeing signs down there myself, and it is occasionally used as a match venue.

I'd say its more so a case of an over zealous dog owner

Thanks for the link Dunner ... That's what I was thinking ... Dogs (not well cared about) are responsible for this kind of parasites ... After making some research on potentially dangerous parasites I was not surprised to see that you can find them also in cats poo (in some places a lot of them are hanging around piers looking for abandoned bait), in birds poo and in fact in the majority of mamals and birds poo.

But you also find worms and parasites in the mud where we are digging baits and also in ... fish and ... human excrement, saliva ect ...

I know that it can be shocking to think you can loose sight with dogs poo but honestly 12 cases per year for a country like the UK is nearly nothing. There is more case of Lyme syndrom (given by ticks) and the vector for this disease is mice.

I fish a lot and never got real problems with dogs and I , most of the time, fish with my Labrador, and other dogs come to see her and cause no trouble.

When we talk about rubbish and disturbance left everywhere dogs are an easy prey and maybe because of a few owners who are not respectful with other beaches or lakes users they will be one day prohibited everywhere. But with a focus on other people (mostly dogs and their owner I believe) we forgot to look on our own behaviour and because of a few idiots and a few small minded people we can also loose the right to fish on beaches...
