I agree thomas,i remember the days we could go out and you would be guarenteed to come home with a salmon.Now you count your blessings if you get one!!What will these boats target next

They have een doing it in Wicklow for years, fish box upon fish box of doggies
for the whelk pots.
Doesn't matter how many are out practices like this that kill large numbers
of any species will cut numbers

true oneillphil,we have already seen that the doggie fishing is down once these boats go through,if this keeps going on then soon the dogfish numbers could collapse,and that would be a sin,there lovely fish!

I know that the small boats have been trawling mulroy bay for dogs to sell to potters/crabbers, they were at it all winter.

time to drop a few "snags" where the trawls are working thus creating small bio-diversities for marine life-forms to start a new eco-system which will inturn start new bigger eco-systems
grrr! it's illegal to dump stuff from a boat at sea, unless you can convince a politician,,,, good for eco!!!!!!!!!!! etc? bad for trawlers. if i had a boat and if i had "snags" and strings to lift and shift them and to pull with politicians......

jus to add to this,
myself and eric fish arklow harbour 4 an hr yesterday.
we seen the boat in question trawling the shore no more than 600yds out.
as we seen the boat travel up the harbour 2 dock we were disgusted at wat we seen
there was loads of dogs trapped in the nets
i havent caught a dog in a long time and even tried 4 a dog up beside roadstone before the harbour 2 no joy as al the dogs were on this boat,
eric wanted 2 sink it and id agree with him.
but seriously if there not stopped soon i fear there wont be a dog left

actually felt really taken a back as it went by, kind of hit home what is actually happening out there,anger was not the word. dogs just being picked out of a net by the one boat. there must be 25-30 welk boats in that harbour, their all up to the same racket. alternitives exist to fishing doggies for bait, at this point in time i couldnt give a sh*t about the; 'we need to make a living' crap. f-them and their living, they dont seem to care about anything else other than earning a quick buck.

I agree fully with you doggie but in fishing close in and catching dogs theyre not actually breaking any laws,however the vast majority of trawlers are using illegal nets which would land them in deep trouble if the sfpa understood anything about nets,trawl gear,pots etc.and herein lies the problem,i know trawlermen are extremely afraid of british authorities when fishing in their waters because they know their stuff and take no s*** but they are so far ahead of the sfpa that its laughable.

weird, i saw a blue trawler not too far out off ennereilly a few weeks ago, early one morning as i looked out the window. now i realize why the fishing has been so sh1t there since.

as a kid i saw these trawl inside dun laoghaire harbour and destroy scotsman's bay too. then there's the smaller scale individuals operating out of smaller harbours with their illegal nets.

agreed, the sooner these one-eared space hopper merchants and their boats are decommisioned by the EU or the economy, and have to to emigrate, the better.

i also think it's time this site closed access to the casual user and search engines. everyone should have to sign up using a credit card (no charge, or small voluntary charge), and forums would be by explicit access only (usernames would remain). wouldn't be too difficult to match the real names against registered vessel owners or anyone convicted of illegal netting.

I see the same 3 boats working my local beach everyday and often within casting distance, I know there was talk in the UK of imposing a golden mile law which we could really do with here, Seeing what gets dumped over the side of prawn boats is sickening and unfortunatlety the general public dont really care

Do these guys not realise that these shamful practices are putting thier own livleyhoods at risk. They cant go on abusing the sea and expect fish stocks to remain the same.What eric and wayne witnesed makes my blood boil and i can imagine how hard it must have been to see such brutality.
