I wonder how long it took him to photoshop that picture ? Some sad people will do anything to get their picture in an angling magazine.

Kevin why do think the picture is photoshoped? i have heard and read about this before. Its not that uncommon some freshwater fisheries in england that are stiil a small bit tidal. i think the only reason this fish is being reported is because it was a double figure fish

Lads might be getting too involved here but there is definitely some kind of image manipulation goin on here.

1. White line on top of fishes head looks unnatural.

2. Lines on belly look like grass but are too straight and also look like they were drawn on with MS Paint or something.

3. Finger is under the anal fin. Ive only caught a few Bass so cant remember if the fin comes off the body like in the pic. It also looks very transparent. Maybe someone can clarify if the fin is meant to look like this.

I use photoshop a lot and another programme called jpegsnoop which can tell you a lot about an image and if its been edited or not. This could also mean the image has been edited by the paper or website guys ie. lighting, cropping so its not 100% accurate but just something to go by.. Must test the software later with a natural pic straight off a camera.

heres a different photo of the same fishhttp://totalseamagazine.com/news/item/188-shock-big-bass
maybe it is photoshoped but was just pointing out that bass are sometimes caught in nearlry 100% freshwater parts of rivers by pike anglers. Most people will think its photoshoped just because it was caught by someone fishing for pike.

i personally believe the photo and story to be probably true, FWIW. i dont think the picture has been photoshopped (ok, maybe cropped or resized) and see no reason to why it would have been to be honest (i.e. the backdrop wouldnt look like it would exactly define a certain place/point along the river. oh, and the fish isnt exactly a world record..). he definitley seems to be holding the fish in the photo, its just exactly where he caught it that would be the issue in question.

i did notice however that the two news reports differ with one saying that the fish was caught 3 miles from the sea, and the other saying 1 mile - quite a big difference. the river is probably low laying and tidal and the marine scientist guy insists that the water would be saline for some distance up-stream from the sea (even moreso as a result of the dry conditions they are experiencing at present), so why not a few miles..?

but anyway, i dont know for sure but whos to say that bass dont ocassionally migrate into fresh water, for whatever reason. some of yous say they do and ive heard of many similar stories for plenty of other marine fish species moving into freshwater (and vice-versa for freshwater species into marine). im not goin to argue, its just interesting.

nah i could believe it alright, its just the craic of targeting pike and ending up with a bass! :D especially one as good as this one! 8)

everyone entitled to speculate of course....

Pic looks good to me.

I can see what folks are talking about, but I've seen one with very similar characteristics that I know is genuine - because 1) I know two witnesses to the photo that I trust and 2) I caught the fish and it's me holding it....

Link to pic available to anyone who PMs me.

are you saying that you caught a bass in freshwater Tanglerat..?
how far 'up-stream' did you catch this fish or how far from the seashore was it i.e. how 'fresh' do you reckon the water was that you caught it in...?
just out of interest

Oh no, sorry, I should have made that clearer - this was deffo a salty fish, nowhere near fresh water. It was the characteristics of the photo I was talking about.

ah, ok, so you are saying that you caught a bass that looks very similar... no worries. :)

i am now convinced that this guy is holding a bass in the two photos anyway. i am convinced it isnt photoshoped. (the bass' head and eyes have moved position in the photo in the second news article)
as i said, its the dispute as to how far upstream it was caught that is of interest...

There's a beach I fish in Kerry where the river trout venture out a good bit from the river, so who knows?

there is no doubt of marine species adapting to 100% freshwater, have seen flounder caught in coarse matches many many miles inland after tidal cut gates, and many weirs etc. for those who know it, gilmores shore above portna locks co.antrim.
