One of the things that we, as anglers, can do to to help with angling statistics is to start a fishing expenses log. I started a log of all my fishing expenses since feb,and if enough of us did this we would have a good database of general monies spent on fishing accross the country.,I am going to record everything related to fishing,including,petrol/deisel,b&bs,terminal tackle, etc.heres mine as an example.
fishing expenses.
17th feb fishing expo swords
greys waders 120
fishing rod 15
reel 45

I'd be afraid to see it all down on paper Noel

,,,,,when I start adding it up I get hot flushes and then start to shake uncontrollably

,,,,,,,,but then the wife says I need to relax more and suggests I go fishing and then it all starts over again.

"May I present Exhibit A in support of my client's application for a Decree of Divorce...the Respondent's self confessed expenditure on fishing......." Etc. Etc. Nice idea but my fishing expenditure is between me and every angling shop out there.

I dont have enough fingers and toes!
I don't want to depress myself, were in a recession and there are clowns like me spending thousands on fishing tackle and fishing holidays
Unless your saying that somehow we could fish our way out of recession

I did that for a year about 10 years ago. Was given a fishing diary for Christmas, so decided to keep a log of angling-related expenditure. Absolutely everything connected to my fishing went in there, not just the costs of charters, tackle, bait etc. Phonecalls, fuel, if I went to a club meeting in the pub and had a couple of pints with the lads that went in too on the premise that if I wasn't angling I wouldn't be meeting them hence wouldn't be buying those pints.
Reviewing the tally at the end of the year

I swore
never to do it again. Ignorance is bliss.

Hi Noel
Can see where you are coming from, and the idea is good, but, should my darling better half ever get her hands on that info i would be looking for a non extradition country to run

but to the idea itself i actually do not think that our friends in government appreciate the revenue that angling in all forms is worth to local communities from the inland lakes to the coast and from the local tackle dealer to b&bs, petrol stations e.t.c

ha ha it looks like it

I shouldn't laugh too much I am in the same boat.....if she found out the true cost of fishing I'd be in trouble

I think she suspects how much it costs but it not spoken about. I like the football idea, she most certainly won't looka that.

Jokes apart, thats a good idea Noel - if enough of us did it (and kept the receipts) they would be great statistical evidence for working out the size of the sector, there's none at all at the moment. Shame they'll never qualify for tax relief.....

humm, last year on fishing expenses came to about €1500 (excluding bait!! and charter boats probably add another €500)
this includes 2 rods, 2 reels, 2 life jackets, spools of braid, bass plugs, batteries for head light, gas canisters for camping stove, terminal tackle, polarized glasses, filleting knife, lead weights!!!!!
now compared to my other hobby
Bass guitar: €1300
Bass amp: €500
Bass cabinet: €200
Practice amp: €200
1 set of strings €45
PA: €700
Stands: €100
DI box, tuner, guitar stand, cables :€300
and all of that was within 12 moths of march last year!!!
like any other hobby I suppose, you get out of it the same as what you put into it!!
