SO CLOSE TO THUMPING TWO PEOPLE

Mon Jun 28, 2010 7:02 pm

hi everyone, well my daughter and i fished dunseveric earlier in the rain and along comes a white boat called dunseveric in blue writing. The old man and a boy in his 20s first drive over one line and then put a lobster pot on top of the other. i shouted at them and asked what the f**k are you playing at, your onto of my line and the old git said f**t your line.
So i packed up and went round to the pier where they were taking the boat out and i jumped out and had it out with them. They said they didnt know, and how they will move the pots. both of them trying to play it down and be all nice because they didnt thinK i would do anything. The only thing that saved them was my daughter being there.
I have never sen such cheak in my life and it takes alot to really break me to want to hit someone.
Any way there are now pot round dunseveric some you can see ad some under the water
look out for this boat and that pair.
i am now checking that they have the right to fish for lobster

Disgraceful behavior probably dont even have the right to catch lobster, you should have asked them about the females with the notch in there tail , see if he knew anything.........good that you didnt lose your cool fair play to ya

ive had the same happen to me many a time - i think the logic very much is that you are on their patch - they know right well your line is there, iv had many look right at me as they go across - they want to make a point - then play dumb - then if challenged its all softly softly

very infuriating

Nicki d
Good for you, and what is better is that you kept the cool. As corbyeire says I am sure that alot of us have been in similiar situations as well. Fished a spot in Feb near dublin and in came 4 jet skyies, messed up both lines as I was waving them off and to make matters worse they then churned up the mark directly in front of me and all around, knowning exactly well what they were at. Man was I enoyed, but the last laugh was mine with 5 codling and a rockling after they left :D.
The sea is for everyone......

this has happened to me loads of times. one time they pulled the pots in as they were moving and fast. the guys sped round the corner from where i was fishing as i went for a piss for about 1-2 mins. luckily i ran down and grabbed my 2 rods reels and tripod worth over £1000 as they were literally being pulled in. suffice to say i got broke off but relieved i just about saved my gear. i am not very well off and really took a big effort over the past no. of years to get my good kit together (now i have kids i would never be able to replace)
actually when i think about it a number of times when this has happened it was definitely done on purpose not to mention d***heads on jetskis and speedboats while beach fishing also doing this on purpose when there are maybe 20 fishermen on the beach.
mostly this is accidental, but there have been times when it has been blatant and taunting also by guys that would not be cocky if they were on dry land. recently i also fished waterfoot beach and a crowd came down with a guy on quad with them. he kept speeding up and down last-minute swerving and narrowly missing me, my dad and sister and our stands. he drove over my bait and was for whatever reason trying to intimidate so i ended up having to play chicken with him by standing directly in his path to stop him doing it. couldn't get my sis and dad caught up in anything. im HALF easy-going but do carry various weaponry in my bag, just in case, lol
its bad enough when you're fishing minding your own business and you magnetise the usual halfwits who talk sh**e in your ear and think they have a right to give you cheek, but i have had and witnessed downright disrespect and nastiness to fishermen.
ps. last year me and my dad did a night session just down whitehead promenade and a drunken lunatic woman in her 40-50's attacked us verbally and started to physically until i let her male friends know i would hold them responsible.
wow your story hit a nerve with me for sure as this is my longest post ever, but i wonder if anglers world-wide have to put up with these sort of things or mostly just here. i wouldn't mind hearing others stories like this

sorry to hear that has happened to you.i have been attacked when i was younger by a man who was fishing next to me. i was float fishing and catching lots of mackeral and he asked me how deep i was fishing, so i told him. i caught another couple and he hit me in the face with his rod and tried to throw me in. it did take long for alot of people to gather round him, so he left as the police turned up.

luckily there were other people around for you, that sounds very frightening for a youngster and would probably make the news these days. i have witnessed innocent fishermen being headbutted etc when i was younger which was very worrying esp with crowds drinking in out of the way places like Blackhead. those half-wit types who come out in summer are often jealous eg. "i used to have that (quite expensive) rod but its crap and i skipped it" whenever they cant even drink beer/cider that costs more than 30p a can. they often have so few brain cells that they get sloshed on booze containing 2-3% alcohol. notice i call them "they" but there is a definite sub-species of human that awaken from hibernation each summer brandishing rods and traces of feathers. do they even know how to cook a mackeral? when i was younger these fish usually got dumped on greens stinking in the middle of my estate and as a child it was quite funny to post them through letterboxes

have been dying to get out as catches are usually better in this weather and mackeral supplies, but i just know i'd be surrounded by them. even if you spin for mackeral alongside them and you catch one they always feel the need to move into your spot. i dont understand why they do this even when they were only a few yards away in the 1st place. these days when i combine the factors of wind and a**eholes i get 1 enjoyable trip out of 10. i do have to admit it pleases me that there are a lot more educated and respectful anglers around at the same time these days, but there are still only the same no. of marks to fish so thats not always beneficial, lol.

Sadly this is what we have deal with. I reckon Corbyeire has hit the nail on the head when he says it's a "get off my patch" issue. I got a good insight into the mind of the commercial fisherman lately when I was fishing the Blackwater estuary. A guy came along walking his dogs and stopped to chat. I'd actually talked to him before in the same spot, but the moonshine had clearly addled his brain.

He started off whingeing about seals. Sample quote: "If a dog attacks a farmer's sheep, he can shoot the dog and get compensation." Well, you know, the farmer pays for and raises his livestock, and no one owns a seal. He went on: "We had four miles of turbot nets down, and the seals took them all." Maybe the problem there is the four miles of nets, mate.

He went on: "I went drift netting for salmon and got 200 in a night by Cappoquin. If they reverse the ban, I'm going to spend €4,000 getting kitting out target them." Now this has to stand as the most monumentally stupid admission I ever heard made to me. Two guys, with rods, on a beach, being told about his illegal activities. I'd have reported him on the spot, except that it without evidence it would be pointless.

Next clanger: "There's plenty of bass about except that anglers are complaining all the time. They'd complain if they went to Dublin and didn't catch a bass on the way." Well, to be fair, the second point is true. Again, though: me, buddy, two rods, hooks, bait ... this guy was clearly as sharp as a hammer.

The main point, I guess, is that these guys simply do not know the meaning of enough; if there was only one fish left in the sea, they'd kill it just to stop some other guy getting it. Nice to know that they don't like us, though: wouldn't have it any other way 8)

Anyway, that's my limited experience. I think Hugo on the site worked as a beam trawlerman for a while; maybe he might be able to give a better insight into the mentality?

we were fishing a beach, when a few guys came down on scramblers, they had loads of room to enjoy themselves, and did, until one tosser on a quad joined them,he drove between us and the beach quite deliberatly, twice, but when he decided to do it the third time,i had a rod ready, and sent a four oz after him, clanging it off his helmet,(did not mean to,just a lucky cast) :D f**ker got the fright of his life,he decided to do something about it,until he saw my filleting knife in my hand, then he thought better! to be fair to the other lads, they appoligized for his behaviour! as for the macky bashers,i just stay away from popular spots,it can be downright dangerous, with leads flying everywhere, and crossed lines, and tempers, its just not worth the hassle.

i just dont understand what goes through these peoples heads. The more i hear the more i get my blood boiling. Everywhere i have been i have met loads of very nice people who stay and chat and give me other marks to try. Even the young boys came down bancrana pier in there cars and were nice and chatty.
Its about time people wised up and learn to get along.

jesus nicki, sorry to hear that man. i'll bet it was squeaky bum time when he saw you pull up in the car  . like brian already said, some of those a$$holes think they own whole stretches of the sea  . i only ever had 1 run in with a pot man myself and it was on the antrim coast. i'd got 4 hours into a session when he appeared less than 80 yards in front of me and started setting his pots on top of my gear. i waved my arms as to indicate "what are you playing at chum" and he started laughing :x :x . i'll bet he was'nt laughing when he got back and his pots were gone   . absolute shame that he used that language like that when he saw you had a child with you thow  . you have a lot more self restraint than me thow as i'd have dropped him where he stood on the dock  so fair play to you man :)

Most bullies do it because they are that way inclined AND they think nothing bad will happen to them as a result.
They are sadists when they think they will get away with it, and become falsely meek when it pans out different.
When confronted, the majority fall back on excuses and the defence: " if I had known you were so easily offended I would have never ....." thereby implying it is partly the fault of the one they picked on.

Those are just excuses after the fact. These c ... think they own the place and want you to fall inline with their way of doing things. Well if you are small and they are big or numerous that may be true, but mobile phones and cameras are a great leveller in court.

I watched a scene once on a big water where a water skier was repeatedly pulling in along a match fishing stretch and cutting their lines to peals of laughter from the occupants in the boat. A heavy boat rod went out with wire line and treble hooks went into the skiers leg. It was not a good thing to do. To tell the truth the engines prop and an expensive repair job was the target but nobody cared. Then they took their boat elsewhere.

In Greystones in the bad old days "casting competitions" took place to hit the trawlers scraping the beach after dark with 5oz leads, and yes they were in that close. We were too young to make our objections at the pier.

The trouble is, standing up for yourself means lowering your standards and maybe taking a risk you can avoid by walking away. Sometimes it is wiser to move. There will always be idiots, but you are not obliged to confront them.

There is one different spin on this type of event. Poachers want to have the place for themselves, so they can get on with business. A lot of this behaviour is an attempt to get anglers to go elsewhere and allow them privacy to net out their beer money.
