Women in Angling

Sea angling (especially from the shore) must have one of the worst gender balances of all sports in Ireland. This is a bad thing. But why aren't there more women out there? Hunting, golfing, even shooting appear to have more women participants. I'd say the balance is higher amongst fly-fishing community, but I don't get the sea-angling situation.

Any ideas?

Its cold, dirty, bait stinks, fish are slimey. Fly fishing is alot cleaner, Trout arnt too slimey. I brought my sister once to Poolbeg once she was mad to go. She lost a substancial amout of my gear but she had a laugh but she decided once was enough after. And to go out a limb there can be a certain snobbery amongst the fly fishermen (which I attempt sometimes) that maybe women find more attractive because it has a certain glamour. There is also the slight danger at some marks particularly during the winter and also some marks arnt the safest due to their remoteness and location. Ive encountered a few headers at a few spots around South Dublin.

And finally my Mam said if I ever bring a Mackerel scale in or near her car or house ever again Im out of the will!

Oh yeah, A river runs though it - Brad Pit. I must have missed the scene when he was digging lug and getting the skin on his hands shredded my wriggling dog fish!

btw, i am excluding that well know character from bulloch harbour from this (though I've never actually seen her catch a fish)

because their celebrity idols dont fish , if posh spice or that horse-headed one out of the sex city show were snapped conger bashing in january then the following day the rest of the sheep would be out!! that and the whole filthy slimy aspect of it aswel

Why is it a bad thing. There's alot fella lookin for a bit of peace and quite when they go out fishing. I guess your not one of them

There's a simple answer to that. Because they are not forbidden to do it.

What we need to do it say that Women aren't allowed to sea angle. Watch the number of women fisherwomen sprout up beyond belief

my wee girl has been fishing and shooting since she was a nipper, started her off with a 4.10 for hunting. as for the fishing she loves it

It's probably better that it stays unbalanced, i Was in Portugal last summer and the girlfriend fished rings around me on the charter.. which made the sea sickness a little bit worse! I still haven't heard the end of it

ditto here the girlfriend caught a shedload of pollack in mullughmore in sligo and still goes on about it months later
