Breakaway Tackle !!! Gone? Going?

Has anyone heard the story about breakaway tackle, apparently something to do with an employee getting lead poisoning. Possibly not manufacturing impact leads anymore.

Apparently people are stockpiling impact leads already. Someone purchased €600 worth from a tackle shop.

Not sure if it is true or not, someone might be just pulling my leg. Hope the latter is the case.

i heard that they have disbanded, any truth behind this ??

as far as ive been told by a local tackle dealer this is true ive stocked up well myself with leads,,,

I just got a reply from Alan Yates who has heard nothing of the sort. He contacted Norman Bickers from Breakaway Tackle, this is what Norman had to say :-

"Thanks for your concern we are still producing all leads but at about 80% of last year because of lead prices and sickness we are only supplying our regular shops and no wholesalers till new year it seems bad to increase prices by 30% so tackle shops can buy from a wholesaler rather than direct from us, Hope this helps Norman"

Seems to just be a 20% drop in supply until the new year. Its funny how rumours spread.

I was told by local tackle dealer that two employees got lead posoining, and thusly there arnt in operation anymore...

Maybe the sickness of employees that Norman from breakaway tackle mentions is from lead poisioning.

I tried google for any info and there was nothing there. Seems to only be a story in Ireland. Maybe breakaway might only have stock / manufacturing capacity to supply the UK market at the moment and Irish wholesalers are having trouble getting their hands on them. Only a theory.

Have any of our UK forum members heard anything?

I'm still going to stock up tomorrow all the same.

Wasn't there an article in Sea Angler or TSF recently about Breakaway starting to make weights with some non-toxic material, not lead :?

same here make all my own grip leads,have just recived another two DCA moulds, 2x 4oz/5oz combined.got them from a crowd called Flashfishing on e bay,made instand payment,an it still took them four weeks to arrive.wont be useing that crowd again.am looking now for another company.........if anyone knows of any could you let me know.cheers.

I think most people have a lead mould to cast their own but most people will agree that the best foolproof system by far is the impact lead.

I agree John,but i have searched e bay an everywhere else on the web,an still cannot find a mould for an impact lead.if know of any about please let me know....cheers!!!

yeah i heard something bout a month ago !! never told anybody so i would have all the leads for me !! :twisted: :twisted: i spent nearlly 300 euro on myself and dbrock !! my mates in the 2 fishin shops were not happy when they got cleaned out !! :lol:

Does anyone know where you can get a mould like the flat breakaway leads?
The namix mould leads are a good substitute for the breakaway impact leads ( the gripper ones ), but the only flat lead moulds i can find are the watch lead types. The flat breakaway leads are better to cast with, but not many shops in cork sell them.

Hi all,
I was just about to put a post up to the effect of them closing.I was buying my new profile rod [what a beaut,been outside in the rain flicking and shaking all evening :P :P :P ,no smart comments,all above board with me :D ] and I was told that the factory is closing due to a workers death more than likely lead poisoning.To be honest the shop owner did a great job on scaring me to death so much so that I did a pick en mix on grips but hadn't much change after the rod so maybe its true or not eitherway my stocking filler will be rather heavy and spiky just in case :!:
Also even if they aren't closing the price will be shooing up [like everything else] as our japanese friends are buying up loads of lead for their nuclear reactors and I think the same story across the water,eitherway better ask santa for a few spairs.

I once heard that a rumour can run half way around the world before the truth has even put its shoes on :lol:

The story I heard from someone who works there.....the guy who makes the leads is off work sick, whoever is covering cant make as many, so they are picking and choosing who gets whats bulk is produced.....I think that means whoever pays their bills fast enough :lol:

They also added that a factory inspector had visited (those guys are never happy about lead anyways) and BreakAway have all the right extractors etc as far as health and safety goes, even the workers have to wear overalls that get washed independent of other clothing, obviously because of secondary lead contamination.

I was told that BreakAway are developing new none lead weights, but until the law states otherwise they will still be selling the same old grippers that made them famous.
