We had an early start to our clubs proceedings this year, it seems no time since the Cod Open to be honest but it was a welcome excuse to dust off the gear and get back to it. Arklow South was the venue and to say it was so early in the year we had a much improved turnout on the beach with some familiar faces returning to the fold along with new members. The weather was calm and mild, the lads laying strings of pots 100m off the beach while we were setting up was a bit disconcerting at the start but it had no bearing on proceedings thankfully.
Right from the off fish were flying in up and down the beach, with small whiting making up the bulk of the catches. Busy as it was, once it got dark it went utterly mental. I watched Lee Meiklejohn cast out with 40 seconds left on the clock, he wound in promptly on the dot of 6 with a fish swinging off his trace that had barely time to get wet. David O'Sullivan the overall winner on the day made the long journey from Kerry, he fished very well, he tipped away in daylight and once it got dark there was no stopping him, hell for leather fishing and whilst it was nip and tuck with a half hour to go he finished like a train to deservedly take 1st place. Special mention to Chris O'Sullivan too, effectively fishing on one leg with 59 fish to the card. Evan Ryan fishing as a Junior was only just pipped into 3rd place by his dad Darren with a superb 61 fish to his card. There were some weary bodies back in the carpark as the scores were tallied up, the motion tracker on my phone said 7km, in chest waders, on soft sand.... No wonder I'm in pain today!
A very busy match with an average of 46 fish caught per angler.
Results are below with a few pics, apologies for the shortage of pictures but it was just too busy I'm afraid. JD, you might post images of the winners on the night if you get a mo please....
