Venues for 2006

Thu Dec 15, 2005 10:34 pm

Hello everyone

We're looking for recommendations from members for competition venues for 2006.

We need the venue, county and the month you reckon it fishes best in... and we're hoping you'll help organise your "local" competition!

But that's extra...

Thanks

Cork, Mid November through to Feb, De Wall, Cobh Deepwater Quay for Cod, Whiting, Dabs, rockling, Conger. Summer through Autumn, Garretstown Strand, Inch Strand, Barleycove, Bass, Flounder, LSDs. Guess Im blessed in that I live 10 mins from De Wall and its fishing its socks off these days. Please please please can we have a comp there! :D

West Clare, Doonbeg, bass. Bridges of Ross (Favourite spot in the whole world!) Late summer, monster wrasse, pollack, conger, rockling, LSDs.

Donegal, Dunree, a rock mark, would be quite good fished as a roving comp due to the variety of ground available in such a small area that can throw up flounder, plaice, dabs, coalies, pollack, ray, LSDs, conger, wrasse, macks, rockling, seatrout, gurnard etc.

Just a few suggestions lads, hope that helps. Good to talk to y'all by the way. Kieran, PM me whenever ya like ref that other thing discussed.

venues in Mayo / Galway / Sligo

March - excellent pollack fishing in Belmullet, 3-6 lbs per fish, several related marks allon the north end of the peninsula, loads of smaller coalfish 1-3lbs, no wrasse on last visit but could be there, rough ground marks are very clearly weather dependent, option of fishing onto sand in sheltered spots for flats, dogs, small gurnard, whiting, small huss in darkness, odd sea-trout as well, congers next to piers and the like.

April - Little Kilary begins to come into its own, rays and specimen dabs, dogs, small pollack and wrasse close in, congers as well, most of you know yourself. Reputed to offer truly massive bull huss in darkness, and I mean well into double figures and this has been corroborated.

May - Keem Bay - nice spot for rays in the summer but mainly at night off the shore / strand which is the only fair competition venue. Lots of flats provided the arse has not been trawled out of it the week before! Dabs will disappear as will the coalfish, to be replaced by some nice plaice (that's why they trawl it) with flounders ever-present and very close in. Some wrasse available either side near the rocky margins, sea trout too.

Keel Strand - monster of a big beach, shingle on top, produces in a surf not so great quiet, with farther southern piece the best from low water up. Flounder, the odd bass, the odd turbot (mostly small), sea-trout too, with pollack, wrasse, coalfish possible thru distance casting near cliffs.

June onwards - flat rocks at the Spanish Armada past Mulranny can produce rays, pollack, congers, gurnard, wrasse (both types), sea-trout and the odd salmon (!), but the bass do not show until July or August. Superb, safe and popular competition venue, one minor hotspot mind...

July & August Mulranny beach (high water) and Murreveagh beach (low water) both throw up dogs, huss and small rays at distance, but Mulranny would produce far more flounders, sea trout occassionally in fair numbers and the odd bass in a surf, especially in July and August. Mullet also possible, especially around Mulranny in calm conditions near stream.

Rossansubble - provided we get no repeat of the red tide, fishes as all stages bar low water. It can go quiet at high water. thornbacks, dogs and bull huss, often one a cast, relatively safe, bit of a scramble down, good for beginners as you only need to lob cast around 50 metres to get fish.

Oddly enough some marks tend to 'die off' in late july and august and only recover a month or two later... more for the autumn later...

Possible East Coast Venues

April/May

dollymount strand- mostly flounder, scool bass and odd eel

greystones/ kilcoole- mixed flats and dogs

June

kilcoole- good flattie fishin, also dogs

July

HELP NEEDED!!! smoothound numbers should be reach a peak on beaches- can anyone help with a venue??

August

beaches can be tough when weather is good! evening session makes success more likely. less people on beaches too! rough ground can be rewarding with good wrasse and red cod along with others. northern end of north beach. gannons.

September

greystones- similar fishing as mentioned for Apr/May, red cod in rough,

whiting start to show

October

whitng increase on all east coast beaches. cod after blow.

Kilkee sees specimen flounder from the beach.

November

ballynamona/ ballyvaldon/ tinnebearna- good numbers of flats, with codling and bass likely. dogs too with possible late big summer species.

MORRISCASTLE- have not fished it but does produce goods fish, particularly at night. need more info if anyone can help?

Decmber

Killoughter- standard east coast fishing, mostly whiting with dabs and dogs likely. cod possible in heavy seas.

Tinnebearna- can fish very well for flats with schoolies and codling showing

January

BIG flounder comp??!!!! few spots like ballytegie and the like down south. east coast beaches get boring!

N.B. WILL ADD MORE TO THIS TOMORROW

Sun Dec 18, 2005 11:58 pm

Im afraid the ban will be in place in Ballyteige (Lacken) in January - so no flounder fishing.

Mon Dec 19, 2005 12:40 am

ahh yes Flounderking. what is the duration of the ban? is there are similar ban on other flounder marks?

Mon Dec 19, 2005 1:03 am

not up here mark!

MARCH

The Slob Bank Youghal. Good Flounder venue with plenty of fish showing at this time of the year. A good chance of cod even this late in the winter too. Can easily accomodate 100 anglers so we should have no trouble with room!

APRIL

Agree with Kieran, that this would be a good time to fish Little Kilary or Rossanrubble for the chance of good fish when many other marks are struggling to get going.

MAY

A good time to fish Shankill to Kilcoole for Plaice and other flats and dogs.

JUNE

Kiloughter and five mile for various ray species, evening tide best. Tramore strand for Bass! Fenit Pier for Stingray!!

JULY

As Mark says smoothound a plenty. The spot where I fish for them wont fit any more than three anglers, but what about Kiloughter or Morriscastle with a good chance of ray. Alternatively Poolbeg pier on a large evening tide will produce smoothies. Some nice fish taken here last summer.

AUGUST

A Conger Session on Dun laoire pier?

SEPTEMBER

Goulane strand near Camp Co. Kerry Surf fishing for Flounder, Bass and Turbot in daylight, dogs and coalies also in darkness.

OCTOBER

COD!!! Most of the mentioned east coast marks will produce but conditions have to be spot on.

NOVEMBER

Ferrypoint in youghal will produce good Flounder and good numbers of codling with a good chance of a very big fish.[/b]

We definitely have to fish around castlegregory, kerry this year lads. Within a 10 minute drive you have:

the 5 brandon bay surf beaches
An excellent thornback mark fishing into tralee bay between castlegregory and fahamore
Camp and Derrymore beaches which can produce a huge number of species , including some massive stingers. You can even fish Derrymore "Island" for Tope!
The rock marks around Brandon head, which again can produce a huge number of species.

The fishing around this area is absolutely superb.

Agree with Steve, some excellent fishing around tralee bay

Mon Jan 02, 2006 7:32 pm

Mon Jan 02, 2006 9:44 pm

venues dependant on time of year and do you know roughly what number of anglers you would be expecting to accommodate???

surf beach venues like benone , portstewart, east strand portrush, ballycastle etc are big enough for you guys no problem as is cushendun, waterfoot, carnlough beaches down the east antrim coast. most fish best from september on as you avoid the holiday makers and children, watersports etc on the beaches.

portrush has a few quite productive summer rock marks to hold a club comp as does the cushendall area and glenarm.

for the rays it would have to be fahan or portsalon beaches in lough swilly in donegal....

let me know what numbers etc and what kind of fishing/ time of year you are looking and ill try to steer you in the right direction.

Fri Jan 06, 2006 11:12 am

Could I also suggest the Coombe in Wexford for a summers evening? Nice beach, and tonnes of fish to be caught there, everyone will be almost guaranteed to catch (as my 7 year old nephew proved by taking two 3lb bass on our last visit!).

committee meeting

Fri Jan 06, 2006 1:15 pm

Hi

Okay I think we have enough to be going on with there.. .more than enough! I will get the committee together and we'll organise a schedule and post this up shortly.

In some cases, we may specify the county rather than a specific mark initially and tighten it up closer to the date, but the dates will be listed.

Many thanks for the contributions.
