You can fish opens if you are a member of an IFSA affiliated club.

However, your members will not be able to fish the Master Angler this November as you didnt run any comps last year.

Shore Angling in Ireland is structured like this:

FIPS - Is the world governing body or International Sea Sportfishing Federation.

Next in the hierarchy are national bodies. Here we have the IFSA, in England its the NFSA etc etc. These national organisations are affiliated with FIPS. The IFSA has a central council which governs the tiers beneath.

The IFSA is further broken down into individual councils, Munster, Leinster, Ulster and Connaght. Each has its own committee and is responsible for rules regarding provincial comps. Each province has a closed and an open championships each year which is fished over one comp. Leinster seems to be the most proactive province and is generally accepted to be the most successful. The Dublin and Wexford clubs are regarded as being amongst the best in the country (in terms of quality anglers ie. past successful international teams have been made up of mostly Leinster anglers. In 2000 when Ireland won team silver three of the five anglers were from Dublin and Wexford. Although O'Sullivan won individual gold. Leinster also runs a highly successful shore and boat league.

In each province there are then a series of clubs. Each club is supposed to run a master angler over a number of closed or open comps. The winner gets to represent his club at the national Master Angler which is moved througout the provinces each year. The top five in the master angler represent Ireland at the World Fishing Games (every 4 years) or the World Shore (which have only European teams competing).

Clubs can also run open competitions which any IFSA member can fish. However, dates for open comps need to be applied for well in advance and must go before the provincial council. Only then will the dates be granted. As this years open comps have already been set your club will be unable to run an open comp until late 2005.

As regards the master angler the winner of your club matches (should the club be accepted for IFSA affiliation) will take part in the 2006 master angler.

Hope this helps and keep the questions coming.
