Lads, can I start getting a head count on this comp please so if we do need a second boat we have some chance of getting one. For any of the lads planning on travelling after the shore comp in Mullaghmore on May 12th, can I suggest staying in Letterkenny.

Please post below only if you are definitely making it.

It will depend on the weather mostly. However, there is a huge range of options available from wreck to reef to clean drifting and anchoring up for thornies etc. You will need a variety of approaches to make the most of it. However, a flowing trace with attractors baited with mack strip winkles out most species. Baited hokkais and shrimp rigs work well too as would gilling tactics at the pollack marks. Off the top of my head, afloat in the Swilly I've had all the gurnard, haddock, codling, ling, thornie, conger, pollack, pout, coalies, wrasse, plaice, doggies, flounder and dabs.

what rod reel, line size do you reconmend, ie 12-20lb or 30-50ld class

Mon Apr 16, 2007 11:02 pm

30-50LB  Keep that for deep offshore wrecking trips or pulling Conger out of holes.... Your 12-20 will be fine Martin. Lighter than that will be fine too. Never fished a comp in the Swilly so when drifting reefs I used to take out the spinning rod and the leadheads and jellyworms, it was perfectly adequate. 20lb line is more than adequate. Bit heavier if you wish if using braid. There is a chance of tope BTW but thats entirely up to you if you wish to spend the time targetting them......

Petekd, Roadrunner, Donal Domeney, Yappo, MC, Paul O'Callaghan, Marco, JW.

Thats 8 which is an absolute max for one boat. If we get a couple more, I'll try and organise a second boat. If we cannot organise a second boat it will be this 8 which will be guaranteed seats aboard with anyone else having to take up a reserve slot as such. Lads, if you're planning on fishing this (as in definitely planning...) you need to let me know now. I know its a while away but boats book up fast.
