some spools can be very slippery if so a bit of insulating tape can help

i just tie a small loop on the end of the mainline, then pass the mainline through it to form another adjustable size loop, let the bale arm off and place this adjustable loop around the spool, bale arm back in place and tighten, this will tighten the adjustable loop around the spool and sometimes a piece of pvc tape is used to hold it in place.
