First rod

A neihbour's son wants to buy his first fishing rod and reel. The boy is 11 and has a slight build. He lives close to freshwater lakes and also wants to sea shore fish. It is a pocket-money job. Any suggestions?

A carp rod of some description might be worth look. I have a Greys prodigy 2.75 (I think) which I use for bass fishing. It covers medium to heavy lures, float fishing, ledgering, etc. It would also leave freshwater options open.

The only down side is that it's a little top heavy for prolonged lure casting or for holding for long stretches.

Not sure if the greys is in the price bracket you were thinking of, but any similar rod is probably worth a look.

Take a look at the latest Argos catalogue, there might be something in there that would suit until he can save for better gear.

The fishing shop in Saintfield has some nice looking kids kits at the moment.
