conger fishing

I asked my hubby about hook size needed for congor and line weight.
He also looking this answer as he said "not my thing and to ask you lot".

It is not that iam about to go try but have read in so many magazines and books and they all have their own thoughts. and i am just looking a basic trace.

Running ledger, wire trace, 6/0 hook, makerel head (with guts?) or whole squid.

8/0 bronzed O'Shannesy 200lb mono and a good swivel would be my choice of trace ,depending on were your fishing you could use this on a pulley rig or if your fishing down the edge of a pier or rock face tie about 4" of line to the top eye of the swivel and attach a small weight here just to get you down to the bottom .make your trace about 1foot long or if you want to hand line the fish out make the trace a bit longer to give you something to lift with .

My set up is basically the same as Ronald's although I do like to use the Cox and Rowal meat hook in sizes 6/0 or 8/0. You could pull the QE2 in with 1 of them :shock: 8)

Most of the big conger are caught sept to november around bangor pier ,though the summer months could fish well but the mackerel bashers are a pain in the ass .

for shore conger i use running ledger..6/0 up to 8/0 hook attached to a wire trace. use the head of a mackerel with the guts ect hanging out. works better for me then the head alone!

I use a 8/0 to 10/0 bronzed hook attached to 300lb mono (crimped) on a pulley rig :shock: :D 8) .

.[/quote]Rockling are supposed to be a good bait for congers they will take nearly all small fish rubby dubby can bring them to your feet i agree sept ta nov is when they feed hardest remember ta use a ratchet :lol:

6/0 hook, mackerel head hooked through the top jaw, 50lbs line (had too many wire traces ruined by congers) running ledger...

Have to agree with steve ,avoid wire ,it can kink and break to easy when a conger is spinning ,as for heavy mono ,i reckeon tying is better than crimping ,i've had crimps burst in the past . 150lb minimum .

id go with ronalds rig, asfor bait, mack head and guts, or fillet would be the most used two.
other baits include pouting, poor cod, herring, squid, launce section, lamprey, and others like liver and rainbow trout all work fairly well sometimes....
blood, scent are the most two important bait factors for conger and to a degree i guess silver flash from the bait colour probably attracts them too.....thats why guys use baited pirks etc on the boat for attraction purposes

what knot do yee use lads? for the heavy mono? trying to knot 200lb there and the trace looks like something from the twilight zone :shock: !

just whatever one locks it all in place!!!keep it simple!
even a blood knot with a few turns is fine...sometimes i use a blob of superglue or whatever on them too.
it aint that hard mark......even my crappy knots are fit to land big skate on similar line!!!!! :lol:

I use aluminium double barrel crimps on heavy mono. Crimped with the right pliers, it seems to do ok.

Some reckon to use heavy mono as opposed to wire as wire tends to damage the conger's mouth?

it's quite possible sandman. also if u loose a fish to the rough i'd rather be leaving mono in them than wire....

wire does do a bit of damage ,heavy mono is thicker so it doesn't cut into the mouth as bad .
