Lures

Im about to start investing in some new lures for the spring season and was wondering what other people's best(most successful) lure was for pollock, bass... etc.

Was hopefully going to try and have a look about the kings hall show and was wondering what is a must lure to have in there opinion.

i dont do much spinning but a buddy of mine that i fish with uses dexter wedges nearly exclusively for pollock and has also had quite a few bass on them.the cast very well and have a good action to them.

I think he was looking for a name or type liam, not a place to buy them. :roll:

As for meself, i prefer a toby or a kilty. green or blue. never had much success with plugs :? .

for spinning many favour kilty lures , abu kosters and krills etc

for plugging many peopleuse plugs from makers like yozuri, rapala, storm etc

as for jellies and shads etc, they are similar, with the lists of them being endless!

Jim Hendrick has a series in Irish Angler at the moment on saltware lure fishing. You might pick up some tips there.

Apart from that, start by choosing lures appropriate for where you're going to be fishing. For shallow kelp reefs, you might use a shallow diver or surface popper. For deeper water, you might choose a deeper diver, like a Rapala J13. I swear by the J13S (black and silver) for bass, but that's probably due to lack of imagination ...

are the wee lead spinners paited silver and green the ones you mean thompo? known up around portrush anyhow as greenfish?

Will have a wee look at the various types of ground I hope to be fishing over.

My fav colour is a jointed white belly with blue back not sure of maker as bought without box but think rapela but have had more fish with this patern than any other.

But i like spinning sandeels alot using wiggle disks have had some good pollock with them

my main problem is what rod to use i have a rockhopper but dont seem abile to get out to deep water. and a carp rod that seems to get out a bit more???/// got a bouncy ball system last year that helps but still want to get out deeper

Yes phil thats them. Seem to be good catchers but the finish doesn't take too much abuse. Got plenty of just lead coloured ones lol.

for pollock the best i have found are:

various jellies, worms, sandeels, shads i like to fish them on a stand-up jig head and bounce them right along the bottom.

tobys, german sprats, spoons. had some good success last year fishing a toby with a silver flasher feather tied on above on a paternoster. the ground wasnt too snaggy, had a double shot of pollock that weighed in at 11lbs (a 5 and a 6). flying c`s are good baits too fished deep and slow for pollock or shallow and fast for bass.

plus dont rule out feathers, had a quad shot of pollock in the summer on hokkais when spinnng for mackerel, all 2-4 lbs. a couple of big flashy feahers or hokkais on a strong trace will catch pollock when they are fry feeding

for bass the old rapala j13 is a good lure, also had some good bass on big-s style lures. my dad had an 8 last year on a toby, and a 9.5lbs bass the year before on a gold mepps with a red jellyworm tail on the hook


poppers, allie magnets and storm chugs have caught for me

It's hard to beat the humble leadhead ! And the fact that they cost peanuts means you can fish rougher ground than with an overly expensive lure.

dexter wedges great for pollock and mackeral around here caught 2 bass on a german sprat this year they are cheap as well. abu tobies can be good but buy the real ones I think they are better. a couple of lads on the site caught bass on kilty catchers this year and couple of others swear by bass bullets.

oh and then theres plugging .....

when they get like that give them a good hard rub over the rocks and it shines the lead up again nice and silver, they still work a treat!

or to help in the first lace, once you make/buy them, gie them a few coats of spray on lacquer, itll tiughen them up a bit to resist a few knocks
