Question about line.

Hey this might be a stupid question but what breaking strain line should I be using for shore marks and rock marks?

Obviously it depends on what im fishing for but is there an average one to be used. I'll really fish for anything I can get but in particular I use a 2 hook pat rig. I attach the rigs to my 20lb line via a swivel clip.

Is 20lb too small? Should I load my reel with something stronger? Have caught a few doggies on 20lb with no worries and a coalie of about 1.5 lbs, but they didn't put up much of a fight. I will be gutted if I hooked my first 3-4lb fish and loose it with a line break.

Any views?

20 is fine - but if your looking for a bit more sport, go lower but then you risk the line breaking

18-20lb is perfect but i would reccomend you always attach a shockleader to your mainline for safety when casting

Thanks lads,

What is a shockleader and how do I attach it to my main line?

Sorry about the ignorance but only at this a few months

Thanks

10ib for every oz of lead i.e 5 oz = 50ib shocky

shock leader

A Shock Leader is a length of line to which your rig is attached. the shock leader is then tied on to your main line of .lets say 20 lb breaking strain. the shock leader needs to be of more breaking strain than the main line. Being stronger it can absorb the shock of casting more and will ,hopefully ,be less likely to break. It will also be stronger when being dragged over the bottom on the retieve. hope this helps

tie your shockleader with a bimini twist knot

do a search - there was a thread on this only a day or two ago with diagrams the lot

good luck with it

Bimini twist is a nightmare of a knot to tie for one person who isn't at it long.
An Albright knot is almost as good and it sorts out both ends, shockleader and main line in one knot.

IMO.

each to his own - but a cleaner knot wont gather as much weed i feel, especially this weather

either will be grand to get you going - figure for yourself which you prefer
