Smaller hooks and baits, immaculate presentation, longer lighter snoods and dont be afraid to fish in close. Always use 3 hooks and keep fighting to the whistle as you just never know....

big hooks and baits o0nly catch big fish.. smaller hooks and baits catch small and big fish..
always fish 3 hooks.. and if the beach is known for flatties.. fish a 2 hook rig if you want to fish distance and have a flyer rig in the surf...

Lying down and sleeping only works for me....! I find using a nice fine wire hook like an Owner pint hook or Kamasan B900s increase the hook up rate on smaller stuff.

varivas hooks are very sharp and i would recommend them for match angling they hook everything in site floatsuits fingers and fish.

Match Fishing more than any other fishing....you must have top class bait before anything else.....otherwise you may as well not bother IMHO and the bait must be right for the venue!
I am telling you what a top man told me over 25 years ago....it probably applies more now than then 8)
Tom.

had to be Dobie telling you that Tom, no better man for top class bait!

Bait.....without the correct types, stored properly and in optimum condition your leaving yourself at a distinct disadvantage.

so I guess preparation is key

that goes without saying - you cant react if you dont have the right gear with you

wash ur hands!!! bait takes on scents from our hands (grease, oil and whatever)....its better not 2 deter the fish from ur hook if u wanna win

My advice is if you were going to a 2 day comp or one a long way away, bring everything. you really never know what is going to happen. you can always leave stuff in the car out of sight if you dont want to brining it on the beach.

right the only problem that I can see is the bait issue, I take it you can order bait in the area you are fishing, lets say Kerry, as if I order some locally it wont be fresh by the time I get there.

Not really you are as good to bring your own just in case you are let down. Plus you do not know the freshness of the bait you are getting. I would all ways bring my own with me.

Secret is a cool bag/box (in the summer use two, one inside the other) and lots and lots of ice blocks. At least five or six.
Alternatively (I haven't tried this myself but I'm thinking about it) one of those mini fridges you can plug into a 12V lighter socket ...

Wet newspaper in ther coolbox ( with the ice blocks) can help as well

Teacher the plug in cool boxes are great. Went away for a few days in September and one of the lads had one. With ice blocks it looked after ragworm and sandeel no bother.
A tip for anyone wanting one as they can be quite expensive is go to Halfords or similar at the end of the summer season and you can sometimes nearly get them half price. I dithered a couple of years ago and when I decided to commit some cash a £69 box for £30 was gone.

I go straight from work to fish in the summer. I put a smaller cool bag into a larger cool bag and back it with ice blocks. Cheap freezer blocks can be made by filling plastic bottles with water and freezing them.
I can't say I'd be much of match angler but I do try and collect fresh mackerel which is the primary bait before our competitions and have multiple traces in my three rig wallets. If one trace works a number spare are needed to double pat and if a few get lost.

what about rag and lug, would they be ok in a cold bag/box with ice, and how long would they last? I could be driving for up to 8hours to get to a match?
