Earthworms for wrasse?

Mon Jul 26, 2004 10:06 am

I've heard of people using earthworms to fish for wrasse, and I've seen people using them too, but I've never seen anyone catch anything with them.

Anyone here ever used worms? Are they any good?

Wrasse will take anything but I can't imagine earth worms being a first choice as wrasse bait. I always used lug or rag but they take any shell fish available on the rocks including limpets and winkles. I've said before about sweet corn being a good bait but then I've never been fishing for big wrasse where small hardbacks are I'm told the bait to use.

I use small hard crabs and prawns when I'm going after big wrasse. They are deadly baits

I've used them quite often and they work fine.

They don't last long in the salt water so you end up going through quite a few, but they are a good substitute for more natural baits.

How do you fish them? On floating gear, I presume?

Lobworms-excellent wrasse bait

Big lobworms prove excellent baits, but they go white and stringy quickly in the salt water. Just as good as other worms. Hard backed crabs, size of an old 50p piece are the killing baits though, fished under a sliding float they are unbeatable

Praise to the one inch hardbacks!

Yip, Its great craic. I just hook the small crabs once through the back so they are still alive, normally I'd use a size 1 hook for them and then a slightly bigger hook for the prawns, threading it through their tail and body without piercing the heas so they stay alive as well.
