Spinning for flatties?

Happy new year! Anyone has experience spinning for flatties as in type of lure to use (up to 1 1/2 oz/40g)? Can't find much info. I've seen soft plugs being used. Does the one in the pic need to be baited or is it used as is? Cheers!

It needs to be baited. All the beads and disks are just to get the fish's attention, you will need bait to get to bite.
By the way they aren't spinners, they are for on the bottom. Mostly used off booms.

check out delta spoons, there used from boats for flats.

You bait it up with rag and cast it out add some extra weight if you need it and retrieve by twicthing the spoon slowly along the bottom, the beads are to get the attention and the spoon gives of vibrations, the fish picksup on this and hits the bait, it possibly thinks that a small fish is getting away with a worm.

I have caught some smallish flatties in Ferrycarrig,Wexford, using a small flying C spun slowly. :shock:

used to do a fair bit of flounder spooning when i was younger. seems to av gone outa fashion recently tho.their best fished in esturies where you cast square across the current and slowly twitch it back across the current. when you get a bite stop twitching and give the fish about 30 seconds to take the bait.start retrieving again and if you feel the wait of the fish give a gentle strike. its a very enjoyable method of fishing, have often seen fish follow the bait to withing feet of where your standing. oh ya its best fished on a light carp rod or spinning rod.if you have to add weight put a small bullet weight in front of the spoon.hope this helps.

had some nice fish on baited flounder spoons. they can work quite well sometimes. mepps spinners will take flounders also. mepps do not need to be baited.

Last year when I was with the Lough Swilly Club, we were fishing a comp on culdaff, some guy was spinning for sea trout and managed to catch a flounder on a german sprat...........although the fish was foul hooked in the back so I guess that dosnt count!!! :lol:

Thanks for the tips. Got some mepps, but I'll need to add some weight for casting and so on. May try the flying Cs and the spoons. I just need to find the marks around Dublin now. I suppose flatties are found in sandy beaches and estuaries??

I was reading this on an Australian site:

"To cover all depths its hard to go past a soft plastic on a jig head..."

I thought the flying Cs could do the trick. Plus they're cheap! Do you think they can work, perhaps with added weight? Any ideas for marks in Dublin?
