Hey, Happy new year to all,

Myself and Pablo are headin to Castlebar the weekend after next just for the weekend. We will have the rods with us and are wondering if there are any marks that someone can recommend?
I have searched the Central fisheries Board website and it mentions some spots around Clew bay, Newport etc.

Anyone any info on these marks or know of better ones?
Any info welcome

Thanks

Ken

Hi

This time of year things can go quiet.
Check the links here for a more detailed and accurate (!) listing of marks.

Depending on the weather I would try mulranny pier at night at high
water (an hour either side), rosmoney for flatfish off the pier in amongst the moorings if the weather is really bad, with the odd huss for additional fun (!), rossansubble with the tide moving up or down will still produce whiting, dogs, huss and possibly still some rays although that is a stretch, or further (hours drive) keem bay on Achill from two hours on the flood to over high water. Purteen harbour is a good backup if it turns nasty. You can still find mackerel and wrasse on the float there alonsgide coalfish, flatfish on the sand including brill flounder and dabs and congers in the rocks. The thornbacks are usually gone, some pollack possible as well.

Roonagh pier has been throwing up huss, dogs and whiting as well as pollack but it can be hit and miss. A big surf gives you a chance at a bass on Silver Strand past Louisburgh but they are as rare as hens teeth...

North, try the flat rocks at Kilcummin for codling and pollack into rough ground facing east, or west, the small cove produces flats and sea trout (which are of course "off the menu" this being the closed season). Balderg harbour (at least an hour in a car) is good and produces bigger fish (flats in the harbour, dogs, strap conger, pollack and the odd small ling in the rough) if there is a big swell but it can get extremely wet!

Above all this time of year, its best to fish into and in darkness...

Thanks Kieran,

Gives me a starting point anyway. Night sessions will be out of the question as I doubt either of us will getting 'planning permission' :? off our better halves who are comming with us to Castlebar.

Just a question now of weighing up the info and picking the best mark which is likely to produce fish.

Thanks for the info

Ken
