Travel tube/holder?

Sun Dec 10, 2006 2:45 pm

Can anyone suggest a rod tube/holder, approx. 1.5m for airplane travel, on the cheap side? Would prefer if I could get it in Ireland as I'd like to have it for Xmas holidays. Cheers!

Go to a Builders providers and get some of the tube they sell....almost any thickness and any diameter.....depending on how many rods your transporting....I use an 8ft length of black drainage tube, its about 6" or 7" diameter...I can get 6 rods (beachcaster) and a rod stand in, well wrapped with padding.....never had anything broken yet and I go to the states and back about twice a year to fish.

Phone the airline your flying with first and they will inform the check-in staff....they take it through E-Xray and put fragile stickers on it...easy as that.....never had a problem yet, but the way things keep changing with airline security its better to check first IMO

oh! you can get end caps for most tube....just tape them on really well.

Good Luck.

Summer 2005, I flew to Tunisia with a length of Drainpipe containing two rods, packed some bubble wrap at each end and taped up with re-inforced tape.

Everything got there and back safely.

This year I flew to France with a a Penn Cordura tube containing a 4 piece beach-caster - again everything got there and back safely.

The drainpipe gives you more options on the length of the rod you can carry and it is the cheaper option.

Make sure you pack all your other tackle (hooks, line, weights etc..) into your HOLD BAGGAGE and not CABIN BAGGAGE - otherwise the Security people will take it ALL off you - non negotiable.

When booking to go to France last year with Ryanair, you could prebook space for sports equipment - including fishing rods - for an extra €30   FECK THAT said I.

I just turned up with the rod in the Cordura Case and nobody asked any questions so I played dumb and got it on the plane for no extra cost....

Good luck and Bon Voyage.

Thanks for the replies! Definitely no time for diy at the moment... I'm going home to Spain for xmas and was considering buying a spinning rod and reel there, so I won't be going with the stuff but hopefully will be coming back with it. So I'll probably also look for the tube/holder while I'm there. Flying with AirFrance this time. Hope they're not too anal on the way back!

Hi ,
Got to your local carpet shop and they will gladly give you a cardboard core they come in varying lengths and sizes. All you have to do is cut it down to what ever size you want.I used them this year and they are great, just the job.

Hope this helps.
