6500 abu mag elite reassmebling

Hi,

I bought an abu mag elite for light beach fishing. Having only dealt with daiwa and penn multipliers I went to take the left sideplate off to tune expecting it to be in one lump and aload of bits fell out. I think I undertand how to basicly put it back together but it doesn't all fit. The schematic isn't much good does anyone have a web site with photos or know an obvious mistake I may be making.

Peter Coogan the Abu tech showed me a trick with the MagElite, if you take the left side plate off its hard to get back on...the mag slider has to be in the right place to get it to click back onto the frame.

Solution....take the right side plate off...spool and spindle out.....put the left side plate back onto the frame, it goes on easy now...then put the spool, spindle and right hand side plate back as normal.

Peter don't go to to much trouble. Toms suggestion of taking the spool out the other way sounds like it will fix my problem. I think I have an old sea angler with an abu reel diassembled somewhere.

In the going the distance video by Neil Mackellow he dismantles an abu reel and explains how to put it back together like what rockhopper said I think you told me you have that on dvd.

By the way what made you take it apart there is no point in fixing something if its not broken :lol:

I never had any trouble at all with any of the Abu reels until I took the left side plate off a MagElite....it had me dolally trying to get it back on....so I called Peter Coogan and he said it can be done by sliding the mag onto a certain number (forgot what one) or by taking the right side off and removing the spool....the left plate goes back on as normal...then everything else fits like normal too.....now I do it that way always.

btw.....it was Peter Coogan who told Mackellow how to do it that way too :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Taking the right hand side plate made life easier and now its back together and working. Unfortunately one of the screws which had been causing problems all along had its head shear off with not much pressure.

I had to take the reel apart as i wanted to put in one of the break blocks and I need to do this anyway when I eventually oil the bearings or service the reel. Its clear the reel is designed to be accessed from the right hand plate as these have the easy access bolts. Its just as well I have people on the forum to tell me.

I gave the reel a quick work out to today and really flew for the first few casts but I gave the rod a flick after casting as I often do with my 525s to get rid of few loops left on the reel and it nested it up. After untangling the nest the start of my line was caught in something from the lake i using as my practise ground so I lost most of my line. I don't seem to be having much luck with this reel.

If your short of a screw (no offence :lol: ) give either Abu or Peter coogan +44-151-677-3609 a call, Peter will post one out to you if you send him a stamped addressed envelope.....for a couple of bob he will probably put you up an assortment of screws and blocks ect if you tell him what Abu reels you have.

I'll have to take the the remains of the screw out first as the entire head has gone. I'll try soldering a piece of metal and unscrewing. We have drawers full of screws in every size inside in work so I'll see if I can then get a match.

Sheared head off...been there done that loads of times :lol: :lol: :lol:

Get a very small pointed diamond file...scratch it back and forth along the top of the crew that is showing at the break.....in time you will have enough depth to get a very small screwdriver head in there and get it to turn......done it loads of times and never once failed.

Another way is with a two pointed compas...push the two points hard onto the broken end of the screw shank and turn....it has worked for me before.
