Have you ever caught a freshwater flattie?

Suppose it's not impossible :lol: Whats the furthest upstream you have ever seen them in a river? Only place where i have seen them was a wee river in Rostrevor, Co Down. I suppose they travel up plenty of rivers. I've never seen any decent sized ones though, they were all small.

All small ones Livid, best I had might have made 22cm although years agon on the Kilcar river the mate caught one which might have made 3lb, was a bloody monster of a thing.

used to catch loads of wee ones on garden worms about 10 years ago when i went salmon fishing with my dad. up round the Roe and the Bush you get them. just thinking they must must have been a good bit up the Bush river cuz it was close to the old Safari park

it is unbelieable how far up river they go! once seen one caught miles up into fresh water....miles past the sluice gates in the bann!in a flood, caught on worm/maggot whilst the guy was fishing for bream!

You see hundreds of juveniles in the Corrib in Galway downstream of the weir, when you're wading the river they're swimming out from under your feet...
Never caught any on rod and line but have got them in survey nets in Assaroe Lake in Ballyshannon, (27m above sea level, they have to go up through a fish pass) to over 30cm. Think flounder are quite happy to spend most of the time in freshwater and only need to return to sea to spawn...

ive never caught one but believe this or not guys they have been taken in lough neagh by eel fishermen on their lines!!

id believe it alright!when i used to fish with the lower bann coarse angling club they were caught from pattons shore (drumaheglis) and gilmours shore (lough side of portna canal)....so that was 1 set of sluice gates and 2 canals later...!they must have enough power to do the fish passes

ive a feeling they r in resident in the lough ive never actually seen one but the eel men tell me that their skin is alot darker than the ones ud get in the sea

they are really dark, sometimes both sides.... i have a feeling that some of the ones that are caught at sea with both sides brown, maybe more permanent residents within rivers or something...???

Caught one about 10 years ago in the canal in Galway at the end of shop street (can't think of the name of the street but it's across from the Garda Station) while fishing for bream with worms, went about 2 lbs. Haven't a clue how he got there as he'd have to clear about 10 ft of a waterfall where it runs into the Corrib..

use to catch them all the time in a wee river in Burnfoot Co.Donegal, I think it was called the dugout, anyway the biggest was about a 1lb, the rest a few ounces, called them teabags because that what they looked like

Similar story on the Argideen down in Courtmac. Word of warning though. I ate one once. In all my life so far and I'm willing to say in all my life to come IO have never tasted anything so epically disgusting!

Used to get them as far up as Westbrook Bridge in the Crana river in Buncrana when legering a worm for trout as a little fella.

Used get the in a small tributary of the Slaney (Carrig river near Ferrycarrig) when fishing for trout as a young chap.. Some other places too.
