Best angling spot in ireland?!

well where is it?!


the purpose of this thread is not to ruffle a few feathers or start an arguement, i'm just looking for what the majority think is the best mark(s) in ireland.


if you put a gun to my head and made me pick, it's have to be the Bridges of Ross (south of Kilkee, Clare) and Kappa Pier (just outside Kilrush,Clare). between these two marks, you could realistically target most species that swim in irish waters.


anyone have other ideas?

i think the mizen head would give alot of marks a run for their money, have had near speciman huss, double figure ray and conger, bass, the usual cod pollack mack, gars, all gurnards, plaice dabs and flounder, speciman ballans and i'm sure a number of others. it has everything from estury and surf to seriously deepwater rough ground,and all these marks within 20mins of the main road in any direction.amazed so little fish it.

Not so sure about Cappagh pier and its ignorant Pilot boats.... The Bridges though for sure.... :D

Cappagh pier to me means being talked out for 3 hours by a local who doesn't fish. The pilot boats trying to rip the rods off the pier. Catching pin whiting while being told it had fished well one night a week ago. In my experience its a very inconsistent venue.

A good venue for me has consisitent fishing which mean I never blank, easy access as I'm lazy and dirty ground to keep the gobsheens away.

id say teelin in donegal or fenit pier in kerry..
between those two i have caught the most species in 2 days :wink:

he was just a horrible repressed memory that you are after reminding me of!!!!
i've never had a problem with the pilot boats, and i have found the venue to be the most consistent on the estuary.
compare it to poulnasherry, carrigaholt beach and that mythical spot that henry gilbey fished cappagh is a wondeful bountiful place where you can get ray, huss and conger, along with doggies a plenty.

the bridges are the business though, with cappagh being the ultimate fall back venue!

I think its Tom but Neilus will know. Cappagh has the wall to give protection from westerly winds but makes it a pain for more than a few to fish. I'm just not to pushed about fishing piers. Theres something magical about getting fish from a beach as for me its what sea anglings all about. I'd gladly fish carrigaholt or Poulnasharry with loads of space over cappagh any day of the week. I'll put mine down as Glin as it fullfils all of my above criteria.

I hate beaches!!!!! while it is fantastic catching fish from a remote strand, facing the surging breakers, it's all the other stuff such as sand getting into every piece of kit i have that makes me hate it so much!!!

rough ground rock fishing is what i get off on!

shingle beaches get me going for some unknown reason, just much prefer to fish them then sandy beaches. but like yourself frodo its rough ground that gets my juices flowing, the scope for species, different techniques and size of fish in my opinion is greater.

For me it has to be Tranarossan Bay which is about 3 or 4 miles outside the Downings in Donegal!! Both the beach and the various rocks marks have some of the best fishing that i've ever seen! To date i've had 7 or 8 different species from there. This mark never fails to impress me for the scenary and the fishing!

Waterford has to be in with a fair shout on this one, there was a bass of about 10lb landed a couple of nights ago from tramore beach and i'm told there was a cod of about the same size taken from the river near ballinakill. Also if cortaz's reports are anything to go by the area around dungarvan can match any mark in the country

Yeah its either Waterford or a mark I fish in Kerry.

Allot of it boils down to getting to know a mark and fishing it correctly, makes a big difference.
I have fished with people in Kerry who have blanked as they were new to the spot where I would have caught bass so it helps to live in either of the southern counties but getting to know the mark is crucial.
Study it at low tide and memorise likely spots that could hold fish etc..

place just past mulranny,deep water close in we battered pollock and mackerel on lures last year.

i`ve noticed all the marks mentioned are from the south :?

i dont think there is anywhere up here that could match the best venues from down south.10 years ago maybe :(
we have a few marks that fish very well for certain species at certain times of the year but not for good all round fishing.
we need to turn this island upside down for a while so us northerners can sample some first class fishing without having to drive 300 miles or more :lol:

is the guy at cappagh not called patrick, with glasses lol we always get tortured from him.

id have to say ballycotton as my fav but the foreigners slayin everything does my head in enough to make me not go back.

the swilly in tope time and tellin pier always make a point of getting to them every year daveys rite up here i say torr head down the rope if ur game enough that place could throw up anything

torr head looks a great spot, ive fished it bout 5 times and never caught a thing tho. never been game enough to go down the rope tho, is that the only good spot?

would b but its a death wish travel lite its the only way to get down had a bad experience once it involved a long piece of rope and a bad knot and my mates fishing bag lets just say it missed him by inches and it didnt bounce also b on the look out for the theiving little scumbag who broke into my car one wednesday afternoon

dingle for me... i know its not a specific mark but the area in general is brilliant. no matter what the weather, you can always be sure of 1st class fishing somewhere on the peninsula.
oh but dont tell anyone!
