That would be a coalfish mate.

ah i originally thought that because of the fork in the tail but id always thought they were darker in colour

damn thought i had a decent whiting lol

we got a few of them around that size all were returned they took herring

What do you think of herring as a bait? I used it once but blanked although it stays on the hook very well.

i was fishing wicklow harbour last night and say the lads pullin the herring nets. it got me thinking that if the herring are there it must be what the fish are feeding on or one of the things that they are feeding on. i didnt have any herring to fish with but the next time i go down im going try so maybe a full one belt it out and see what happens.

How did ya get on in Wicklow harbour? Some fish showing up there lately

Mon Nov 27, 2006 12:30 pm

Those dam coalies  - absolutely everywhere down here

Every one of gets hooked halfway into their guts as they wolf the bait straight down
Have tried using huge baits but they will go for anthing regardless of size

- how do you deal with that ??

Dont want to kill em getting hooks etc back but how??

We only got coalies but there was plenty of them there some one forgot the bait so we only had re-frozen bait. There was plenty of people down there fishin all the same

Mon Nov 27, 2006 12:37 pm

Ha ha ha ha i hate when a fishing trip is spoiled before it even starts, forgot my bait elastic last time and all i had was peeler crab for bate!!
nightmare

Stop its a b~~tard alright, must say thou theres plenty of coalies still around and the herring are still there just has me wondering if the tope might be still there. I tried killcoole in october around 3 times but didnt even get a run, u heard of any gettin got from the shore around the wicklow area???

Mon Nov 27, 2006 12:45 pm

download the irish fisheries species guide mate, handy little booklet, everything your likely to catch in it

Mon Nov 27, 2006 1:41 pm

Killiney is suposed to be holding tope at the moment i haven fished it doh.
and a few nice codling.
Think there was a competition in kilcoole yesterday i no a lad who was going down when i see him ill see how they got on an let ys know!! most Wicklow beaches arent fishing great at the moment as far as i can see!

Very very interesting, what reports have you herad from kiliney in regards to the tope, one of my mates has caught plenty of them from the boats around kiliney and i heard that a few where caught off the back of the island in dalkey i think it really is only a matter of time before someone pulls one in off the beach, i think however your best bet would be to fish white rock for them, the place does be invested with whiting and id say the tope would be in feeding off them.

Mon Nov 27, 2006 3:36 pm

whers white rock?? ive heard of lads cathching tope from the beach
and a few reports have been of tope runs and half eaten dabs and that
been relled in so theres tope there alright

Mon Nov 27, 2006 3:41 pm

when you get on to kiliney took to your lrft pass the tea rooms and you will see a rocky out let behind that is a small cove called white rock preety good fishin there for flats in session two years ago my mate caught a bream there as well. theres always good feeding in the area beacuse around 20 or 30 yards out there is a sand bank loaded with sandeels, we used to pull them down there.

Mon Nov 27, 2006 3:50 pm

Sounds good although small whiteing can do your head in on a fishing trip
prob get a tope doh if ya put in the time!! mite give it a shot prob get coalies and mayabe a codling

thats what i was thinking if all those small fish are there, and there does be more of them at night, then the tope and other preditor fish have to be in feeding on them
