Sticky rod joints help needed.

I am having problems removing a section of my rod from each other. I have spigot joints and every time i fish it is a bitch seperating the two sections they do come apart but only a matter of time before i damage rod or an eye if hand slips or something.

any advice

Give the spigot joint a good clean with hot soapy water inside and out of both sections - that should help.

If this doesnt help, rub a candle around the spigot.

clean the female part of the joint with a bottle brush using soapy water.

sometimes a little rub with very light emery paper is required on the male joint if it is too tight

if this then gts too loose over time it can be built back up again with candle wax or more permanently graphite spray

A word of warning.....when you have a tight spigot, more often than not its humidity that swells the unvarnished fibres of the male spigot....be very careful, even with the finest of emery cloth or sand paper.

When it happens to me...the first thing I do is what Estuary Lad said "clean the female part" first and the clean the male end to see if it cures it....sanding would be my last resort.

To unjam a tight spigot without doing harm.....put the rod joint behind your knees....grip either side of the joint with your hands, keeping your hands tight in to your closed knees....open your knees and it should free the 2 sections.

That may not be a quality problem, most of the guys who take Zziplex rods to Florida have the same problem.

It may be in the fibres or the resin or even both, its the fact that the offending area is not varnished (for obvious reasons) that causes the problem.....I have heard some say a very light oil helps seal the spigot from moisture.....I wouldnt tell anyone to do anything I've not tried myself, so my last remark is not a solution :)

I find a quick wipe using strong damp kitchen towel on the female part is often all thats needed.

Anything other than being on your own on a beach 30 miles from home at some unmerciful hour with a 14 foot rod refusing to part...... I had to use the Bullbar as a vice on one occasion to seperate it. It was that or I was putting it on the roof......

Clean as above with soap and water, apply small amount of graphite oil spray to the joint, assemble the rod, inserting the tip and turning at the same time. Do not completely fit, but enough, so that you can keep turning the joint, this will match the two sections to each other and help seal the carbon fibres. This as worked great on my Zzippy's. Nice and smooth, easy to split apart.

I remember reading somewhere that a quick spray of household furniture polish like "Mr Sheen" or similar will lubricate the joint as it contains silicone. Rubbing with a pencil lead is also supposed to work apparently.
