bass action group

Sun Nov 19, 2006 11:35 am

The Irish Bass Awareness and Protection Group will be meeting again in early December of 2006. This group although small is developing slowly and is hoping to achieve partnerships with the fisheries boards, the marine institute and other bodies to assist in the protetcion of sea bass.

We are also compiling our first (small) publication about sea bass fishing and many of its aspects and would welcome and contributions to the publication from any angler on this forum. This will be compiled to a .pdf and distibuted widely via the web

We have a small agenda of events for 2007 which will be developed at the next meeting these include - talks by experts, fishing weekends, visits by people from other countries to share experiences / assistance.

Any angler interested in joining/attending the next meeting or helping the group in any way please dont hesitate to mail me.

Thanks
Jim

Just to add to Jim's post, getting involved in the group is a great way for concerned Bass anglers to make their voices heard.

Until Jim suggested forming the group at the beginning of the year, I, like many others on the forum, had been writing my own letters to politicians and bringing any illegal Bass netting I was aware of to the attention of the fisheries boards.

Collectively, however, I believe an organized group can achieve much more than the sum of its parts. Through the few members that the group already has, we have contact with the central and regional fisheries boards, marine institute, guides and angling press. There are lots of other anglers on the SAI forum who have an interest in Bass fishing and who feel that something should be done to protect and develop the Bass fishery. This new group needs their input.

This first few months has seen an exchange of information and the discussion of a few ideas. Now it is time for the group to turn words into action to protect Irish Bass and to raise awareness of Bass sportfishing in Ireland.

Regardless of whether you want to get involved in the long term, or would just like to make your opinions heard, you should get in touch with Jim or come along to the next meeting (to be announced).
