Hello there ....

Was thinking of going to Howth tomorrow night .... maybe for some Congar (?) .. Whats the best spot and any tips? Not necessaraly Congar btw ...

Hi was wondering if you can still get bass off Dollymount Strand I fished there a few times when I was kid (about 25 years ago) and got quite a few..Lazycod :)

We do our best to keep threads on topic. If you would like to generate some conversation on Dollymount then post a thread with "Bass on Dollymount" as a title or something like that. The problem is that if we juat have a few big threads covering all the topics on the site it will be really difficult to find the info you are looking for.

You can still get them alright lazy. Up at the monument on rag crab, at the other end of the beach into the channell and also off the bridge, it still throws up big fish around sept , oct on the eveing high tides.

pablo, try the elbow on the east pier theres abig holr there runs about 20 yards out, fish mackerel into it bring some spare rigs, if youre fishing a spare rod and get a few pouting, fish one here its a killer for the conger.

Anyway ..... went down and caught sweet f**k all :( A couple of small fish and almost two seals!!!

Howth... the information here is old so take it as you see it...

Fish directly into the shipping channel with flatfish rigs with worm baits and you will pick up dabs, flounder and plaice. Nice plaice occasionally.

Mackerel and gars in summer. Strap congers to legered baits on the bottom. No wrasse owing to the sand and disturbance. Rockling - yes.

Keep a spinning rod handy and fire it out after a boat has passed as the pollack will often follow it in looking for scraps - the seagulls should alert you as to any gutting in progress. The fish often just surf in on the bow waves and wash, something I discovered fishing off the split rock on the nose many years ago.

A massive conger used to inhabit the harbour around the elbow on the east pier on the inside, not the outside, but there is nothing else there bar fingerling pollack and sculpins. Last time I heard it was landed it was estimated at 40 lb + and that is quite a few years ago...

Lots of mullet in the harbour in the summer, but impossible to catch...

Most people fish off the rocks at Balscadden, mostly mackerel bashing but in winter it can produce whiting, poor cod, the odd real cod, and lots and lots of dogfish. Large lobsters too! Seals are a resident evil there. The small beach behind the apartment block above the east pier can produce the odd bass, very odd and has even been known to offer wrasse and a single red gurnard! Small flatfish available as well, mostly dabs.

Behind the west pier throws up the odd large bass but it is infested with rats and the tide and currents can be extremely dangerous. Fish off the rocks and do not venture onto any part of that beach. A search will reveal how an experienced member here almost never made it back...
